What you need to know about health and hygiene with regard to your pet and aviary birds

Decent hygiene is the biggest contributor to ensuring a fit and healthy bird or flock, whereas poor hygiene is the most common cause of poor health within your avian community. Of course you may unknowingly acquire a bird that is not in peak form and whose health still deteriorates regardless of what you do; I’m sorry! But in this situation there’s nothing you can do, best to accept your loss and try again, but hopefully and with a little luck you will never encounter this type of situation in your bird keeping pursuits.

The first thing to do if you have a number of birds and want to introduce more to your menagerie is to keep your new bird in quarantine for a few weeks, that is to keep it separated from your other birds so as you can monitor it and deal with any health or other issues before introducing your new cage or aviary mate to the rest of the group. This will prevent any infectious illnesses being passed on to your other birds. This is very important and should never be overlooked even if your new feathered friend appears fine when first acquired!

Get to know your pet bird or birds, keep a close eye on them, interact with them and watch them regularly. This way if any of your birds have a change of character or appear down then you will instinctively know that you may have a problem.

I am not a vet, just an enthusiastic bird keeper and as such I am unable to give you detailed lists of avian illnesses or how to deal with them, always best to consult an avian vet if you are worried. OK, I know that vet bills are often quite extortionate so I would advise to take out some type of pet insurance to help cover the costs, there are plenty of good pet bird insurance deals available, try the local pet shop, the vet, or do an online search for a good deal.

If you are observant enough you will soon spot any bad signs but to help the signs of ill health in most pet birds are the same:

    your bird plucks its feathers

it loses its appetite and eats less than normally

bare spots appear in the plumage

    discharge flows from the nostrils

the plumage of your bird starts to look dull or ruffled

the eyes appear slit rather than round

changes in the birds’ droppings occurs

sneezing occurs more than just occasionally

the bird screeches more than normally or in a new way

your bird sleeps more than normally

If any of the above changes are noticed in your bird then a potential health problem is likely to occur, if not occurred already.

As mentioned earlier, a good hygiene routine will help enormously to prevent health problems. We’re not talking ‘clinically clean’ here, just basic hygiene:

    Daily

check food and if required replace with fresh

change water and replace with fresh, thoroughly clean water dish at every change

remove any uneaten fresh food and dispose of in the correct manner

    Weekly

clean out the cage or aviary fully

scrub all perches and furniture in cage or aviary

thoroughly clean all food and water dishes and fill with fresh

wipe clean bars of cages, inner sides and inner top of aviary

thoroughly clean cage base, sweep debris off aviary floor and mop with weak disinfectant solution, rinse and allow to dry before permitting your birds in

    Always

make sure all foods given are clean and safe, use same regime as if preparing food for yourself

wash your hands before handling bird food and before handling your bird

again wash hands thoroughly after handling your bird

Try not to use any detergents or disinfectants when cleaning your birds things unless they are safe for animal use, check the packaging or buy specialist animal safe products from the pet shop (but these can prove to be rather expensive). You can alternatively use a very weak solution of disinfectant or detergent when cleaning your bird things but you must then rinse them with fresh clean water and allow them to dry completely before returning them to your bird accommodation.

If it looks dirty then clean it; if it looks clean then clean it anyway just to be sure!

Popular pet bird species for your consideration

    1. Cockatiels.

Cockatiels are members of the parrot family known for their singing and whistling abilities who originate from Australia. Having a small to medium built makes them easier to care for. They are known to be quite entertaining and delightful, giving you endless fun. Although they can learn how to talk, they often prefer to whistle. Cockatiels do tend to mimic sounds they hear. Imitating sounds like the dog barking or the telephone ringing is not uncommon with this species. Cockatiels come in various color combinations and have a life expectancy of up to 20 years.

    2. Lovebirds.

Again with a life expectancy of about 20 years, lovebirds are amongst the smallest members of the parrots family. Most owners will not trade these for larger birds as they have personality as well as intelligence. At around six inches long, these beautiful birds are one of the smallest parrots, beautiful to look at, undemanding and quiet makes lovebirds ideal for people who live in apartments.

    3. Parakeets.

Another bird from the parrot family and, like the cockatiel, originating from Australia. Often called the long-tailed parakeet (also known as the budgerigar) is the perfect pet bird for kids, especially as a first childs pet. Available in many pretty colors they only require a small amount of space. Budgerigars are small and intelligent and will often whistle as well as sing. With a lifespan of up to 14 years, these little birds are undoubtedly the most popular pet birds of them all.

    4. Canaries and finches.

Not from the parrot family, canaries and finches are known as waxbills or softbillsare. They are relatively small birds – about 5 inches or smaller – and will require less space because of this. Canaries can be kept on their own but finches thrive in small flocks. As these types of birds do not care much about the attention that they get from humans they make perfect companions for those who cannot afford to allot lots of time in engaging their birds in activities. If cared for and treated well they can live for up to 10 years.

    5. African Greys.

Quite a large bird from the parrot family they are an ideal lifetime companion because they can live for up to 70 years. They are the most intelligent of all pet birds, and can even learn around 2,000 words if trained well. Smart but very demanding, the African Grey Parrot will get bored and lonely if you do not take time to engage it in stimulating activities. If however the opposite is the case your efforts will surely be rewarded as these birds are very affectionate in nature.

So choose from the above list when you want to get a new pet bird. Make sure that you will enjoy their presence, whilst being able to give them what they require.

Bird Cages and The Importance Of Location

When someone goes out and buys a pet bird and a cage, they have just taken on a big responsibility. A pet bird requires special care and to have a happy, healthy pet bird, the owner must have an understanding of birds in general. When taking on a bird as a pet, it is highly recommended that the owner obtains at minimum, some sort of “Guide Book” about caring for birds. Too many people buy birds, get them home, and do not have a clue of how to properly care for them.

One of the most important and first things to consider, once you have brought your new bird home from the pet store is the location of the cage. The location of your pet birds cage will make all the difference in the world, when it comes to their health and well being.

Make sure that if you place the cage near a window, that the bird is not getting full sunlight directly on it. Although birds get plenty of sunlight as a wild animal, when they are caged, try to avoid full direct sunlight. It’s O.K. to let them sun for about thirty minutes at a time, but no more than a couple of times daily. Try and locate the cage away from any entry doors that may allow for cold drafts during the winter as well. Do not place the cage directly over heating or cooling vents, as this can severely dry out your birds skin and feathers.

Never, ever locate your birds cage in a kitchen area or area where there is cooking going on. Keep the cage away from teflon coated pans, aerosol grease sprays or hot water. When cleaning around your birds area, be careful with aerosol cleaning sprays, as a birds lungs are very delicate and can be easily damaged. Do not smoke cigarettes in your bird cage area as well. Burning incense near the cage is not recommended either.

Location of your pet birds cage is just one small thing you can focus on to have a healthier and happier pet bird. Just make sure as a bird owner that you have some sort of a bird guide book for reference, and learn all of the warning signs that your bird will exhibit if there is a potential problem. Birds really do need a lot of specialized care.

How to Find Confidence: Mike’s Story of How He Overcame Anxiety, Depression and Obsessive Compulsive Disorders

Hello, my name is Michael. Actually, Mike is not my real name, but I will use the name Mike to tell my story.

I love this verse from Psalms:
He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord.

It sounds good, doesn’t it? But the question is: how do you get to where you have such a firm heart and settled spirit? How do you find confidence?

It took me a long time to get to where I could understand and say something about having “a firm heart and settled spirit.” I used to be Mr. Jellyfish.

But here’s the good news: if I can do it, anyone can do it. It took me 40 years, but that was because it took 40 years for me to get to the point where I was ready. Once you’re ready, recovery can begin in a heartbeat.

And it doesn’t have to take 40 years to be ready. (I was stubborn in my pridefulness and denial). You can be ready in this instant regardless of your age, if your heart is pure and you are sincere.

Here’s my story. Let’s begin with a few thoughts about anxiety and some observations about life and how I started to recover.

When you are in a tight golf match and it’s the 18th hole and you have to make a knee knocking three foot putt, what do you do? You suck it up, get a bucket full of guts, and even though your knees are knocking, you attempt the putt. Maybe it goes in and maybe it doesn’t. The point is–you overlook your fear and trembling and attempt the putt.

What do you do when you’re in a tough basketball game in the last minute of the game and you come to the free throw line? You throw up the free throws. You don’t cut and run, or take a drug.

Let’s say you’re a doctor on a cruise ship in the middle of the ocean and a passenger has a major acute emergency that has to be dealt with now. Do you become upset and run away because you can’t cope? No, you deal with the situation, even though your heart may be pounding and your knees knocking.

I love what John Wayne had to say about this. John Wayne was answering questions from the audience. The microphones and cameras were all there. Someone raised his hand and asked: “Mr. Wayne, what do you do when you have to face some great danger?”

Do you know what John Wayne replied? Without a moment’s hesitation he gripped the podium, leaned forward a little, flashed his famous smile and said: “You’re scared to death, but you get on your horse and you ride anyway.”

Thanks, John. You’re my kind of guy.

The ideal, of course, is to be like John Wayne said. It helps to have a bucket full of guts. And it’s even better to have faith. And with it, love. In one of his letters, Paul said: “Perfect love casts out fear.”

Most heroes (the types who arrive at the scene and save some one’s life) later say they didn’t feel like a hero. “I just saw something that had to be done and I did it.” The hero had no thought of self. Instead of second guessing, worrying about the consequences, and dwelling on self preservation, he or she just did what had to be done. This is very close to faith and love.

Few of us have much faith or love. We don’t even know what faith or love is. But we know them by their absence! Most of us are well acquainted with copping out, avoiding, becoming hostile, resentful, and then making excuses and seeking reassurance.

But there is still hope that we might develop faith and love. The history books are full of stories of people who did not step onto the stage of history until they were older. And when they did, they somehow found the courage to make a difference.

I have discovered that the secret to life is in overlooking. You have anxiety, but overlook it. In other words, instead of struggling with, suppressing or trying to get rid of the anxiety, you overlook it.

Overlooking works when it comes to being more forgiving with others too. Let’s say someone makes a mistake, but this time you overlook it (instead of judging or resenting them).

Similarly, you have doubts, but you overlook them (instead of dwelling on them). You feel anger (at your child, for example), but you overlook it (and remain calm).

There are many good things I could say about overlooking–how it helps us overcome anxiety, doubts, fears, negative emotion; and how it helps us be more patient with others. But for now, I will mention it in passing. Later I will talk about meditation and how it helps you learn to stand back, take a deep breath, and overlook.

But I don’t want to get ahead of myself. First I want to talk about how we got into the mess we are in, and how I was able to recover fully.

Before I have any credibility with you, I need to establish that I had a multitude of issues, got past them, and now they are in the distant past and no longer important (other than being able to use them to help others).

Let me continue with a bit more about how we got to where we are. Unfortunately, many of us did not have wise parents and other authorities. We were not provided character building activities, or even much real work. We were made to sit in school and basically do nothing for hours a day from age 5 through 18 or beyond.

In plain and simple terms, some of us just haven’t had a chance to build up some courage or chutzpa. We have been robbed of the kind of experiences where we could develop it.

But we can start to build some now, by using the “overlook principle” I alluded to. We can be just like John Wayne said–scared to death but we ride anyway.

Once you realize that you have been denied character building experiences (through being kept from them or from not being taught how to not over react), you can stop beating yourself up. Instead you can simply admit you don’t have certain virtues built yet, but you can start to do some things anyway. By overlooking the fear or anxiety.

You will also discover that kindness, fortitude, endurance, graciousness, and patience are ready to unfold when you let go of resentment. We tend to resent the type of circumstances where we looked bad or failed in the past.

If you can learn to approach the new circumstance without resentment, then experience the anxiety (without resenting it), you will be then free to meet the moment with some aplomb. Now having met the moment properly, you will be able to meet the next one ever more easily and without resentment. Anxiety will diminish.

You will discover that there is joy and a sense of triumph in meeting a moment properly. Even if you don’t “win” or handle it perfectly, there is joy in meeting it without resentment and with a certain amount of dignity.

Realize that in a hedonistic, secular, therapeutic culture in which we live, all the signals and messages we get are that the values in life are:
    having a good time;
    feeling good;
    being nice;
    feeling good about ourselves;
    and having our needs met.

Many people around us–even many of our parents, grandparents, educators, church leaders, and other authorities– have the value of always seeking to feel good and never bad. At the first sign of the slightest ache or pain, they reach for a pill or some other medication to take away the symptoms.

So when it comes to life and its ups and downs, they also seek to have a good time or at least feel good. One person listens to classical music and another to rap music to feel good; one listens to high sounding speeches and another to low brow humor, but either way it’s for the purpose of feeling good. One drinks beer, another martinis, another smokes, and another takes a pill to feel good.

Instead of living and teaching the value of doing what is right and overlooking anxiety or negative emotion, they first seek to get rid of the anxiety or negative emotion.

This is putting the cart before the horse. We triumph as humans when we overcome anxiety or negative emotions through doing what is right and being virtuous.

In other words, a true human gives the food to their child even though they themselves feel hungry. A true human does the right thing despite fear. S/he tells the truth, though s/he is made to feel uncomfortable. She acts calmly for the sake of others, despite anxiety. He says “no” to temptation despite having feelings of lust or greed.

The noble person does not wait until he feels good or feels brave to do his or her duty. The noble person does his duty or what is right, and in the exercise thereof develops courage.

Courage, well being, peace of mind and joy are the rewards for doing what is right.

When the partying, drinking, and drugging result in a let down, hang over or discomfort, the misinformed and selfish look for a pill to take away the symptoms or the awareness of the discomfort so they can feel good.

In other words, it’s definitely not your great grandfather’s lifestyle or values.

So when life brings a little rain, and the young people are not having a good time or do not feel good about themselves, they tell their parent or counselor. Instead of getting the wisdom of the ages or the kind of understanding an uncle or grandma once had, they are referred to someone who prescribes a drug.

The focus is rarely on duty or on helping others. Moreover, as we said, most young people are deprived of useful work that would make them feel needed, valuable and other directed.

The focus is always on them, specifically performance: that they achieve, that they do well on tests, study more, get higher grades, be more compliant, and so on. Otherwise the focus is on being popular, having a good time, and feeling good about oneself.

With all this constant attention directed at them (not to

So you got a Parakeet, now what?

When it comes to your lovely little feathered friends, no home is as comfortable as the one that allows room to move, play and sleep. The type of bird cage you purchase for your parakeets is as important as they type of food you feed them. A bird cage that is too small limits their ability to thrive and to learn. A bird cage that allows extra room to explore and play allows your bird endless possibilities to entertain themselves.

Studies have shown that a bird that is well entertained is a smarter and healthier bird. Confined spaces promote boredom and ultimately decrease the lifespan of your little friend. Boredom also fosters aggressive behavior and an increased tendency to be more destructive to the things around them. Even if you have a limited amount of room for a bird cage, you should consider the largest cage for the space you have.

Bird cages come in a variety of colors and shapes. They have big bar spacing and they have smaller bar spacing for the littler guys we enjoy so much. Safety of the bird cage is a key factor in choosing the right cage. Parakeet bird cages are recommended to have a bar spacing of 1/2” to 5/8” to protect against entrapping your parakeet’s head between the bars.

There are a variety of bird cages from small single bird cages to larger multi-bird cages. Which ever cage you choose, be sure to pick a cage that is safe for your birds, large enough to enjoy and strong enough to endure for years to come.

Giving your pet birds the right food for health and vitality

There are loads of different choices however and you could easily become overwhelmed by the choice available, try not to go for the least expensive as it rarely meets the right balance, but also don’t go for the most expensive as the excessive price is rarely justified to meet your birds requirements. Somewhere in the middle is best.

Make your choice and then stick to it and buy the same mix of the same brand every time, a sudden change in the staple diet of your pet bird will likely cause digestive and health difficulties, if you must use a different mix then it is imperative that you introduce it gradually – half old half new to start and then gradually decrease the amount of the old brand and replace with the new; so don’t allow your previous mix to run out before purchasing the new type.

If you keep a number of birds in a mixed flight or aviary then you might think that you need to purchase different types of seed mix for your different birds. Wrong! This will prove rather expensive and very unjustified. The chances are your birds will try and eat whatever you give them. Look at the content and product information on the seed packaging, it should tell you exactly what’s in there.

For example; budgie mix contains mainly white millet and canary seed, – canary mix contains mainly canary seed, rapeseed, hemp seed and niger seed, – foreign finch mix contains canary seed, Australian panicum and white millet, – parakeet mix contains white millet, sunflower seed, canary seed, red millet, buckwheat, safflower seed and oats, – cockatiel mix contains canary seed, red millet, safflower seed, sunflower seed, hemp seed, white millet, oats, and paddy rice – so looking at the above then a proprietary cockatiel mix will suit all. Notice how canary seed is used in all and millet in all but one, these are staple foods for your bird. However finches and budgies tend often not to bother with sunflower seed but your other parakeets and cockatiels will eat it. So why go to the expense of different seed mixes when one will do?

If you have lots of birds it’s also better value to buy in bulk, you can save a fortune this way rather than buying small amounts at a time. Contact your local pet or animal feeds supplier, and purchase your bird seed mix by the sack load, and if you can’t or don’t want to fetch it most will deliver it for you.

I have been feeding my birds this way for years and never had any problems, even when breeding.

I advise you to give an assortment of alternative foods, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, to add variety to your birds diet and help with their health (this is covered in more detail in a separate article). Green vegetables and fresh tree fruit (avoid the pips or seeds) are good for your birds and easily obtained. Most vine fruits are also OK, plus melon, tomato, bread, unsweetened biscuits. Your birds will also love chickweed, dandelion leaves, and carrots. But see my other article ‘A brief outline of alternative foods to give to your pet & aviary birds’ for more information.
