LIVING OUT LOUD–August 2010

This is a blog about a life (mine) that is really largely uneventful but for me quite satisfying, or as Shakespeare once so aptly wrote, “a poor thing but mine own”. I plan to give the bare bones outline of the days, the weeks etc. of my daily experiences with pertinent ( I hope) comments. Why would I want to do this? I suppose, because I can!

August 2010

Last month there was a vote in the senate about whether to extend unemployment benefits with Democrats in favor of the extension and Republicans mostly against. It was a close vote, but the Democrats ultimately won and the benefits will be extended until November. Since I have several friends who have been trying desperately to get jobs and have been largely unsuccessful, I was watching the results of this vote with much interest. The checks my friends receive are not for luxuries, but rather to allow them to pay for their basic needs for one more month. Providing for at risk workers in a difficult economy is not a hand-out, but a necessary safety net to guard against hunger and despair for our most vulnerable citizens. I find it hard to believe that anyone with the least amount of compassion for their fellow man would vote against that!

In a lighter vein I have formed a relationship with a bird that definitely brightens my day (and anything that brightens our days is certainly much to be desired.) It is a beautiful, colorful lovebird that looks similar to a parakeet and is displayed in a shop window where I frequently walk . Because I pass there so often, it now knows me and performs various tricks for me on the many toys in its cage when I come up to the window. I have learned that lovebirds are very intelligent and will live about 10 to 15 years. Although I am not really a pet person, this surprising and fun relationship has again reminded me of nature’s many wonders.

Also this month, there has been more news of bombs and suicide bombers in many different parts of the world. This frightening development was clarified for me recently when I saw the movie the “Hurt Locker” winner of 6 academy awards. It highlights what our young men in Afghanistan must daily endure and makes it more and more imperative for all of us to work harder to bring them home as soon as we possibly can.
