Parakeets should feel safe in their cage. Place the cage in a high place so that your pet will feel that they are safe and keep them in a room free from any other pets that could harm them, like cats or dogs. Also, be sure that the cage is not is a place that is too drafty or in an open window where the sun can heat it up too much. When you first bring the bird into your house, make sure that you put them in a room that is calm and doesn’t have a lot of activity. Keep your voice in a regular and normal volume. The place where the parakeet lives should not be noisy with loud music blaring in the background, nor too quiet either. Birds will become too paranoid if they cannot hear anything because it makes them feel as if a predator is lurking around. You can talk with other people quietly and play some soft music. As days go by, your pet parakeet will trust you and will realize that nobody or nothing will hurt them. This is the only time that they will try to explore their new home. The key here is to let the bird get used to your home and your family. Don’t surprise your parakeet by rushing over to the cage or making loud noises. If you want to approach your new pet, walk calmly in a steady pace towards the cage while talking calmly and softly to your parakeet. Remember, your home is a brand new environment for your pet parakeet and they are probably a bit nervous and scared. Introduce them calmly and give them several days to get used to their surroundings before you try to train them or take them out of the cage. If your household is chaotic and noisy, try putting your bird in a calmer place like your bedroom for the first few weeks and then gradually introduce them to the regular activity of the household over time.
