Can I train my cat and parakeet to coexist?

    Category: Parakeet Training

We have a cat and a parakeet. We keep them in seperate rooms most of the time. When we have had them in the same room, we have had to grab the cat when he approached the cage. Is there any chance that we can train the cat to not go after the parakeet and train the parakeet not to be afraid of the cat?

Well its possible, but not likely. Your best bet is to try to train them just to ignore eachother. I’m not really up on training birds, because frankly I don’t like them. But cats I do know a thing or two about.

You need to teach the cat that going after the cage is a no no. You could try everytime the cat nears the cage, spraying it with a spray bottle, or, fill a can or something with some change and shake that. Also, try petting the cat near the cage. Not too close, but close enough so the cat can get used to the smell and all that. Maybe play with a toy or something.

Yes you can, I have parakeets and cats, the cats like to watch them, I never had to train them, they like to be on top of the cages and just lay there, not trying to scare the birds, just watching them, when they were kittens they did try to claw at them because like all kittens they want to go after anything that moves. A friend of mine actually had a cat that would let her place the parakeet on it’s back and ride it around like a horse.

It has happened but it’s not very likely. It’s a cat’s natural instinct to hunt. Your cat can’t help it. It just comes from many millions of years of survival.

I suggest you get a nice large cage for your parakeet so that it doesn’t feel couped up.

Just so happens I have a large cage for sale! Contact me and we’ll see what we can work out.

I would agree with those who say it is not worth the risk. Even a large bird could be injured by a cat who was just playing. Keep up with moving the cat away from the cage when it looks like it is stalking the bird, but I would just keep them in separate rooms when you can’t be there watching. Having a kitty looking in at your bird must be frightening for the bird, I don’t think you can help it get over that fear. Keep kitty out of the room with the bird cage unless you can stay with them :)
