The Available Methods for Parrot Gender Determination

Usually, a bird’s gender is unknown to other species of beings; it is a well kept secret for the bird itself and its kind. When nature created the birds, it never took into consideration the human specie and the knowledge that this last one needs.

In some birds, the gender can be identified by the individual’s colors, wither completely, or, in some cases, only when they reach maturity. The eclectus male for instance is green, while the female is red. At maturity, the nasal area (cere) of a parakeet male is blue and the female’s one is brow. However, there are still many species of birds that don’t have different colors depending on the gender.

The importance of knowing a pet’s gender is represented by their owners’ desire to give them proper names or to know what pronouns to use when they are addressing or referring to the animals. It also matters for the breeding of the animals because some people know not to expect babies from a pair of birds of the same sex.

Many methods were discovered so far to determine the birds’ gender, some of them scientific and some of them, most of them, non – scientific, discovered by common people in their own houses. We will show and overview of the scientific methods of discovering the birds’ sex: DNA Sexing, Surgical Sexing, Blood Feather Testing and Fecal Analysis.

Every method of testing has both negative and positive sides and the best one is the one that fits the owner’s needs and the situation.

The DNA Sexing method:

In this procedure, a drop of the bird’s blood is required for a DNA testing. The DNA will show an image that will provide reliable information about the bird’s gender. This method is very accurate but it takes up to four weeks to be processed.

The blood is collected from a vein or a toenail by the owner and placed in a prepared collection of vial. This way it can be sent to a lab even by using regular mail. This method is very easy to be performed and it is not stressful.

A bird’s DNA is unique and cannot be modified. So, as in human DNA, a bird’s one is the same since the moment of birth until death. Those tests performed on birds DNA can also be stored by the labs that own a data bank and can be later used for identification or matching.

This method is thus, very easy to be done, it is not expensive and if the period of waiting for the results is not a problem, it may be the best choice. This DNA test will show a bird’s gender and not its capability of reproducing.

The surgical sexing method:

The second method of discovering a bird’s gender is the surgical sexing. This can be done only by a veterinarian, through endoscopic surgery. The bird is put under anesthesia and through a small cut in the bird’s skin, the veterinarian inserts a small metal tube with a light attached on, called the endoscope. This way, the bird’s sexual organs can be seen and, along with the gender, the veterinarian can determine the sexual maturity, any abnormalities and the possibility of reproduction.

Even though this method is very accurate and quick, it may put the bird under a lot of stress. Unlike the DNA sexing method, this one provides immediate results for the owner, in case this one is interested in breeding the bird. The procedure is quite safe, but, on some occasions, it may generate some post – operative or anesthesia complications. The primary concern was the injected anesthesia because it induced a long period of sleep and vomiting. Researchers have discovered new anesthetics for the birds, gases that eliminate the side effects caused by the injected ones. Those new anesthetics are considered by the experts to have negligible risks and the bird will wake up in a matter of minutes after the gas mask is removed.

In the past, veterinarians used to tattoo birds after their genders were determined through surgery. Males were tattooed under the right wing and females under the left one. More recently, microchips or leg bands were used for marking them.

The Blood Feather Analysis (BFA) method:

This method requires a blood chromosome test. This test is performed on cultured tissue from the bird’s blood feathers. If the bird has no blood feathers, some will be pulled out and in their place new ones will grow in two or three weeks. Those feathers are put in a special container with cold packs and sent via priority mail to the laboratory where their tissue is grown and researched under a microscope. The results will appear in around two weeks.

As in the case of DNA sexing of the birds, this method is accurate and safe; and it works on any bird regardless the age but the results are not prompt. As negative sides of this testing method are the higher costs for priority mail and the impossibility of checking the sexual organs of the birds in the cases of breeders.

The Fecal Method of gender determination:

This method is not as accurate as the others and it depends on more than one factor. It consists in collecting fresh fecal samples from the bird in special conditions and mailing them to the lab. The specialists will determine the gender by the hormones (estrogen and testosterone) level from the fecal sample. This method can only be applied on mature birds and it depends on the health of the birds and on the conditions of the sample’s collection.

The fecal method is not expensive, is safe and should bring the results in one week.

Every person will choose the sexing method for his or her bird as it best fits his or her needs. Probably, the breeders will choose the surgical method because of it’s advantages, while those who own a pet bird will choose DNA or BFA methods.

Your True Size Is Measured By Your Courage, Wisdom, and Love.

Even as a baby elephant, Bulig was big.

As Bulig grew up, he was taller and bigger than all his playmates.

It didn’t take long for the other elephant to be afraid of him. And Bulig knew this. So he used his size to terrify others to do what he wanted them to do.

He’d snort and growl as he’d say, “I’ll crush you!” It was his usual greeting to anyone he met on the road.

Obviously, if the other elephants were scared of Bulig, the other smaller animals would be as well. Monkeys, deers, tigers, and even lions stood in awe at the huge animal.

The elephants gave him a special home on top of a small hill. And Bulig’s throne was a gigantic bed. There he lay down and lorded it over the jungle.

Each morning, the elephants would give him a basketful of bananas. And the monkeys would give him a basketful of apples. And the deer would give him a basketful of nuts. This happened everyday.

So Bulig grew even bigger. And the more he grew, the more terrified the animals became of him.

He now became a god to all the animals there.

A group of pelicans took turns fanning him.

A group of parakeets sang to him in the morning.

A group of monkey acrobats performed for his evening entertainment.

For the longest time, Bulig never much left his home.

In fact, for years, he didn’t even stand up from his giant bed.

All he really did was snort and growl once in awhile, “I will crush you!” And every time he said it, all the animals would be terrified.

Because he didn’t move much, he became as fat as ten elephants put together!

Now, even other animals from other jungles would visit to see for themselves if the Legend of the Giant Elephant was true. And all of them would stand in terror at the sight of the great beast.

One of those animals was a tiny turtle by the name Pokito.

Pokito heard about this Elephant and wanted to see him.

Being a young and playful turtle, he thought it would be great to be friends with the giant elephant.

So one day, he walked up to Bulig who was like a mountain compared to Pokito. But Pokito wasn’t afraid.

He said, “Hi great Bulig! Can I be your friend?”

All the animals around Bulig gasped in horror. Who dared speak to Bulig in that way? Does he know what he was saying? Poor turtle!

Bulig was insulted that a little creature was not worshipping him as a god. So he snorted and growled his usual growl and said, “I will crush you!”

But Pokito was a wise turtle. He saw that behind Bulig’s size was great weakness. He felt pity for him. So he simply said, “Bulig, I just want to be your friend. If you don’t want to, that’s fine. I’ll just go on my merry way…”

As he turned around, Bulig got even angrier and snorted and growled again and said in a bigger voice, “I WILL CRUSH YOU!”

All the animals scampered behind bushes, rocks, and trees. It was the first time they heard Bulig this angry.

Pokito turned around to face the giant again and said calmly, “Bulig, I wouldn’t do that if I were you. You might hurt yourself…”

Bulig’s face turned red as a fire truck.

He stood up. Or at least tried to.

Remember, it has been years since he even stood up!

“Ummph… Ummmph…. Ummmmmmmph!” Bulig struggled and struggled but couldn’t stand up!

“Bulig, please don’t do that…” Pokito said.

All the animals left their hiding places. They were totally shocked to see their god having difficulty standing up!

Finally, Bulig’s legs folded and he came crashing to the ground. Whaaam!

Bulig was now in pain, but his humiliation was even greater than any physical pain he was feeling at that moment.

First, a little monkey began to jeer.

Soon, other monkeys joined him.

And after awhile, all the animals began to ridicule Bulig. They taunted him and called him names. “Weakling!”, “Fatso!”, and “Blubberhouse!”

That was when Pokito screamed, “Stooooooooop it!”

Everyone hushed at the brave turtle in front of them.

“For years, you worshipped Bulig as a god,” Pokito said, “but now, you’re insulting him as the enemy. Why are you doing that? Bulig is just one of us, just like any other animal.”

Pokito marched to the embarrassed, whimpering Bulig and said, “Do you need help to stand up?” Sheepishly, Bulig nodded his head.

The turtle turned to the other elephants, “Help your friend stand up.”

The other elephants were astounded by the wisdom of the little turtle. All of them went beside the giant, and together, pushed him up.

With great effort, the huge elephant stood up.

With his knees still trembling, Bulig smiled at the turtle and quietly said, “Thank you. You are the real giant.”

Pokito smiled. “Thank you.”

Bulig asked, “Can you be my friend?”

The turtle said, “On one condition. You have to join me in jogging every morning.” He winked.

And all the animals broke out in laughter.

7 Lessons for Life

But deep within, a bully is a fragile child with lots of fears.

Life is too beautiful to be sad at one person’s rejection.

People-pleasers want to please everyone. And when one person rejects them, they die within. Because people-pleasers need to be needed. When a person rejects them, they get hurt deeply—and carry this hurt wherever they go and allow this hurt to affect their lives forever. What does a mature person do when they receive rejection? They get hurt like everyone else but they don’t carry the hurt. They shake the dust of their feet and move on. They love themselves. They love life.

Lesson #5:

When someone is angry with you in an unjust way, pity that person.

He will be hurting himself.

Don’t pity yourself when you suffer unjust anger. Remember that unjust anger destroys the person who is angry, not you. Pity him.

Lesson #6:

Always be good and kind to everyone—

whether he be a king or a beggar.

Every human being you meet in life is God’s child. Whether he sits on a throne or lies on the mud, it makes no difference. That person is your family.

How to take care of Parrots

Parrot occurs in northern Australia living in semi-arid areas with few trees and shrubs. Breeding parrots are my hobby and interest. My bird grows in the cage with dimensions 1×0, 6×0, and 6 (length width height). Birds successfully bred and multiplied in these conditions for a long time. The problem lies in eating with suitable choice of diet because large propensities to weight gain, which may be significantly adversely, affect the l?gach. Parrot diet consists mainly of seeds: millet (yellow, white, green, Japanese), sunflower (very small amounts of 3-4 grains per bird per day), remember that it was a small sunflower that the birds can go husk), hemp, flax seed, canary seed, and various kinds of grass seeds. Parrots also eat all kinds of insects and worms. Supplement the diet these parrots should be fruits and vegetables such as apples, carrots, corn in the milk stage), yellow and red peppers, strawberries, mandarins, oranges, celery, parsley, red beet, green beans and biscuits. During the breeding season diet enriched of different types of seed mixture and boiled egg. The molting also provides the egg and sprouts, because then the birds in particular need of many micro and macro elements.

A particular problem of parrot reproduction and many other species of parrots are to find the pairs. Personally, admits to a single frame, at least 6 young, unrelated birds and try to make themselves in pairs. It is certainly better than matching on the “strength” adults. In nature of parrots they choose their partner once in a lifetime. Choosing Nursing ripped each pair is almost 50% of success. During the breeding season I give every 2-3 days to stimulate vitamin clutch Optimin egzotin “E” and I give different kinds of seed mixture and boiled egg. An egg is allowed to stand at the time of the abolition of the first egg until the first young appear. Mating occurs in different ways, it depends mainly on the parrots. I noticed several mating in morning rather evening, when it is quiet and calm, or early in the morning. Female consists of 4-6 white eggs, which are incubated for about 21-22 days mostly alone (not noticed that the male helped during incubation), when the female incubated eggs thoroughly male feeding female sometimes even entering the booth while the female incubates the young to increase humidity in the room up to 70-80%. If we can not raise the humidity should be give extra bowl of water under the hood and frame, and their abilities to increase the maximum humidity in the room.

The cage should not fail to sepia, lime, and charcoal and crushed shells from the boiled egg. Let us remember that we should provide as much minerals that would normally raise the wildlife. Sepia and lime can be bought. Shells of the eggs are also very easy to obtain. Charcoal: the most mobilized by flaming piece of stem or stick on the fire. I break it into pieces and I put in a cage. Not be used charcoal from market! Bird, if you will need it for sure will benefit him and certainly did not hurt.

Hood can be checked after about 7-10 days. Parrots fairly well tolerated by the control booth. Scanned eggs and then see whether they are fertilized or not. If the eggs are dark and you see the red veins that means that they are fertilized. If the egg is not fertilized should consider whether the order is not due to negligence or lack of peace. In any case, if the little parrot is unfertilized eggs should not pull them and throw away, because the next clutch parrot may itself break down or sit still no eggs. Therefore, it is safer to leave them. The female usually very aware of the eggs that is empty so they know that.

If the chicks are fully grown it is primarily to ensure that parents have provided the utmost peace, and a sufficient amount of food. Please note that the young birds grow very intensively, and their nutritional requirements are very large, so we can not afford any negligence. Also, for the Umbrella Cockatoos, some dimension of about 36x30x72 inch would be ok. For a Conjure a cage with size measurement of around 20x20x24 inch would be fine in order to keep your parrot cheerful, relaxed and healthy.

There are many kinds of parrots seen and they too have distinct sizes of an enclosure. If you keep the Coffin Cockatoo as a pet then the cage should have a preferable size of around 48x36x48 inch.  The same dimensions would also be good for the Moluccas Cockatoo.  Now for the Rose Breasted Cockatoo then you should go for the cage dimensions of around 36x36x36 inch.  The parrots which are small in nature can stay in an enclosure of around 18x22x24 inches. For instance the parrot Quaker Parakeet is of this type. For different other tiny species like Cockatiels and Budgies the cage dimensions of around 18x18x24 inches and 20x12x18 inches respectively would be fine. Remember that the entrance of the cage should be good and big so that the parrot can enter and exit from the cage easily.

The devices that you use while serving food and water to the parrots also play an important role other than the cage dimensions. You must keep things such as cups to serve water to the parrots and also toys so that the parrot can catch these things from inside of the cage very easily.

LIVING OUT LOUD–August 2010

 

 

This is a blog about a life (mine) that is really largely uneventful but for me quite satisfying, or as Shakespeare once so aptly wrote, “a poor thing but mine own”. I plan to give the bare bones outline of the days, the weeks etc. of my daily experiences with pertinent ( I hope) comments. Why would I want to do this? I suppose, because I can!

August 2010

Last month there was a vote in the senate about whether to extend unemployment benefits with Democrats in favor of the extension and Republicans mostly against. It was a close vote, but the Democrats ultimately won and the benefits will be extended until November. Since I have several friends who have been trying desperately to get jobs and have been largely unsuccessful, I was watching the results of this vote with much interest. The checks my friends receive are not for luxuries, but rather to allow them to pay for their basic needs for one more month. Providing for at risk workers in a difficult economy is not a hand-out, but a necessary safety net to guard against hunger and despair for our most vulnerable citizens. I find it hard to believe that anyone with the least amount of compassion for their fellow man would vote against that!

In a lighter vein I have formed a relationship with a bird that definitely brightens my day (and anything that brightens our days is certainly much to be desired.) It is a beautiful, colorful lovebird that looks similar to a parakeet and is displayed in a shop window where I frequently walk . Because I pass there so often, it now knows me and performs various tricks for me on the many toys in its cage when I come up to the window. I have learned that lovebirds are very intelligent and will live about 10 to 15 years. Although I am not really a pet person, this surprising and fun relationship has again reminded me of nature’s many wonders.

Also this month, there has been more news of bombs and suicide bombers in many different parts of the world. This frightening development was clarified for me recently when I saw the movie the “Hurt Locker” winner of 6 academy awards. This is an honest and brutal film about the Afghanistan war and its consequences surprisingly directed by a woman Kathryn Bigelow which depicts the ongoing day by day danger and inhuman stresses endured by one company of young men as they do their job of de-fusing unexploded bombs.
