Projects Abroad Update From the Taricaya Conservation Research Centre in Peru
Stuart Timson, Director of our incredible Peruvian Conservation Project gives us the news from the Amazon Rainforest:
The heavy rains promised by the storms earlier in January never materialized and so this wet season has been relatively dry thus enabling us to work without delays over the last couple of months. With the lodge filling up to near capacity and the willingness of the volunteers to get stuck in I have been able to advance much quicker than planned. A lot has been accomplished in little time and I will try and do justice to all the hard work and the latest advances at Taricaya.
Let’s start with the ongoing improvements in the animal release program and needless to say there are new residents in the project whilst old friends have been released back into the wild. Our nursery is starting to fill up and there were three new arrivals over the last few weeks. A first at Taricaya was an infant common squirrel monkey, whose continual chattering is now a familiar sound around the centre. Later the same week we also received another young paca and a dusky-headed parakeet chick. The nursery seems much more vibrant with the new additions and the place has also been brightened up by the artistic talents of some of our volunteers who painted numerous animals on the walls creating a much more colorful environment. Plans for April include new cages for the growing macaw populations as just two weeks ago we received two more chestnut-fronted macaws and a scarlet macaw.
Just as we received new guests last month we also released some old ones. Bianca the young paca was growing at a phenomenal rate and was quickly outgrowing her cage in the nursery. Pacas are naturally very independent animals so we decided to release her just in front of the lodge. Being nocturnal by nature she is now happily running around at night often startling volunteers on their way back from the dining room. She is continuing to grow and appears to be thriving with her new freedom.

Moving on I feel that several sightings around the reserve are worthy of a mention not only for the amazing experiences they provided for the volunteers but also as indicators of a healthy ecosystem and reflecting our good work in the reserve. Anaconda Colpa had not been visited for a while and the first few groups to use it this year had some great sightings including a red-brocket deer, a tayra and two grisons. The last two species belong to the weasel family, Mustelidae, and the grison is an animal that we have only ever seen once before around the reserve. Last week a group of visiting tourists got a wonderful surprise when they reached the top canopy platform to see a margay standing in the kapok tree. This small arboreal cat is rarely seen as it is generally nocturnal but I am confident that this individual was the one that we released in 2004 about 600m from the canopy. Whether it is the same or not it is a wonderful sighting, one of the best at the canopy so far.
The farm project continues to flourish and in March we concentrated on our Heliconia project. We are already producing large quantities of flowers from our original plants but this month we were given a collection of many different species to grow and hopefully make nurseries should the flowers find a market. This meant that volunteers were clearing and planting a lot of the time and we now have several plots with neat rows of the different species. We now have to wait for the plants to react after the transfer from Puerto Maldonado and hope that the new species produce flowers with a good market value. Elsewhere at the farm the donkeys are recovering well from a stomach parasite and the volunteers are training them by riding them around some of the trails. One female is pregnant so she just follows along behind without a rider. The idea is to increase their stamina to enable them to work when fully recuperated.
As you can see a lot has been accomplished already this year and with a lodge full of industrious volunteers I expect to keep the work rate up over the coming months. It is an exciting time to be involved and there is plenty of work for everyone!!

Laughter Is The Best Medicine For Anxiety, Too
We all have heard this adage so many times that the meaning is lost on us now. However, this is indeed wisdom that you should give due importance. Anxiety is in one way the opposite of happiness or laughter. By this definition, it would make sense that if you laughed often enough anxiety would not be able to establish a hold on you. However, what if the anxiety already got hold on you? Could you reverse the condition with laughter? Yes, you can.
Laughter therapy is today accepted and promoted by traditional doctors because it is indeed able to do miracles. Just by laughing aloud about 10-20 minutes every day, you would reduce your blood pressure, heart problems, and respiratory problems and boost your immune system. How does this work? Laughter promotes the production of endorphins or the feel-good hormones, which in turn relax the body and mind.
Laughter also regulated the function of the endocrine glands, whereby the hormones production in the body is regularized. Hormones, as you all know, are what keep our systems functioning properly; once the hormone production is optimal, all the systems in the body perform optimally. The result is that you look, are and feel healthy.
You should seriously consider taking up the laughter therapy and laugh aloud for about 10-20 minutes every day. Initially, it would be difficult to laugh without any reason. This is why laughter therapy works best when practiced in groups. For best results you need at least five-six people who would get together and laugh loudly; there would be a leader who stands in front of the group and laughs loudly asking the group to follow him or her, just as a lead would do in aerobics or any such exercises. Just because everyone would look so silly, people who would initially laugh forcefully would gradually enjoy themselves enough to have a good laugh.

In case the laughter therapy does not appeal to you or you are unable to practice this, there are other ways to ensure that laughter becomes an integral part of your daily life. Here are ten easy and effective suggestions:
1. Read jokes on or off the Net
2. See a comedy once in a while
3. Learn to laugh at yourself; you will never run out of reasons to laugh
4. Learn to look for the lighter side of any situation; it would take a while initially, but after a while, you would be able to instantly see the funny part even in the worst of situations
5. Nurture relationships with people who laugh easily and are projecting happiness around them
6. Avoid morose, pessimist type of people, unless you feel you could help them cross over to the humorous side
7. Make it a point to do something that you love and gives you happiness, at least once a week. Every three months treat yourself with a small gift and once in a year have an outing with your friends (exclude your spouse, if he or she does not match this circle) and have a blast.
8. Introduce a pet into your home and life. Anything would do – a fish, cat, parakeet, dog, badger, rabbit, lizard, frog, snake and what-you-may-have. As you learn to appreciate this being, you would feel relaxed and happy just by watching the animal(s). The pet therapy has been proved as being one of the best boosters of ‘the will to live’. When senior people were introduced to pets, their memory, health and overall disposition improved considerably. People ailing with terminal diseases started responding to medication; depressed patients made a faster transition, and stressed out people felt more relaxed in the company of animals.
9. Look around you and start a ‘I want to help’ chain. Help someone you know who needs help; instead of accepting their thanks, ask them to help someone they felt needed help and so on. It is amazing what a little kindness can do to your life and that of others.
10. Do a good deed every week just as a regular feature. Helping others gives you a sense of achievement and fulfillment that no professional or personal accomplishment can equal. When you know you can make a difference, however humble this would be, in somebody’s life you would feel a sweet, quiet inner happiness that cannot be compared with any other.
Humor has been accepted as a great catalyst in medicine, a fact endorsed by umpteen research studies on a huge repertoire of diseases, especially serious disorders. Train your mind to see the lighter side of life and you will find that when you open the door to laughter, the one leading to worry and anxiety is shut tight.

The following is a list of some of the animals you may like to consider. Of course, it is not an exhaustive list of animals that are suitable for an apartment lifestyle, but it may give you an idea of the type of pet you would like to own.
1. Hamsters are wonderful pets for apartment living. They are neither messy nor noisy. They don’t take up a lot of space either, as most hamsters spend the majority of time in their cages. Obviously, it is important to get you hamster out of his, or her, cage at least once a day to play and explore. You may even like to purchase a hamster ball so that your hamster can run around your apartment in safety. Hamsters make minimal mess and usually do so in a specific spot in their cages. Therefore, it is important to clean the cage regularly to ensure that it stays smelling fresh.
2. Birds, such as budgies and parakeets, can make ideal apartment pets. However, they can be quite noisy and this may cause problems with your fellow tenants and your landlord. The good news is that birds will go to sleep if their cages are covered, so, you will be able to ensure that your birds are quiet at night. As with hamsters, birds are predominantly kept in cages, but it’s always a good idea to let birds out of their cages from time to time. However, before releasing them, you should ensure that there is no way for them to escape.

3. Fish are possibly the best apartment pet. They take up little room, make no noise and require very little in terms of care. That said, it is important that your fish tank is cleaned regularly and that your fish have plenty of foliage, food and any special requirements that your specific fish may need. However, they do not need to be taken for a walk, will not make a mess and will not wreck your apartment while you’re out. On the other hand, although fish are proven to relieve stress and are excellent pets, you can’t cuddle with them on the sofa.
4. Cats are very independent animals and, therefore, do not usually mind if they are left alone for hours at a time. However, if you’re planning to share your apartment with a cat, it is important that you have plenty of toys and climbing apparatus to keep him, or her, amused. Many cat owners find that a bored cat will become destructive with furniture, walls and curtains, so, it is always wise to keep your kitty stimulated. Cats tend to be very clean animals, and, if properly litter box trained, you will have no problem with mess.
5. Ferrets are an increasingly popular pet. They are extremely affectionate and intelligent animals that can provide a lot of love and laughter to their owners. They are also nocturnal, which could be ideal if you’re at work during the day. However, ferrets are very active creatures and need lots of space to run and play, therefore, you may find that a section of your apartment needs to give way to a ferret playground with tunnels and toys galore.
Of course, there are many other animals to consider, such as small dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice, lizards and snakes. It is important to check the regulations of your building before purchasing an animal, and it is equally important to ensure that you can provide the proper care for your pet of choice.

Chan Do Internet Success System Teaching-How To Select Great Topic 5
As I have explained in my recent posts I am together with
Patric Chan for all of my internet marketing activities.
He is my adviser and gives me a lot. Now I am working
one of his RPS2 coach in education business. This topic is
the last one on selecting great topic as indicated in Chan
Do Internet Success System. Let us go, a few more topics
destined to explode.
These are intense hot topics that are sure to be on the rise.
You can bring in any one of these to use for your first ebook.
Then come back and pull an additional topic for your next ebook.
Using the latest electronics. We are the people obsessed with
having the latest and utmost technology. Do an ebook on
iPods, email/camera cell phones, wireless Internet, digital
TV, or any combination of these items.
Home improvement.
There’s so much of a trend in this area that do-it-yourself (DIY)
stores are on every corner of major cities. If you haven’t been
to a Home Depot or Lowe’s recently, then you are one of the few.
Sure, apartment house dwellers and young students aren’t in this market,
but people with homes and money to afford them are in this market.
In fact, some cable TV services offer whole channels committed
to home improvement.
In particular of existing interest are in-home automation systems.
DIY home improvers are eager to learn about and purchase things that
will achieve their home lives more relaxing, high-tech, or fun.
Create a book to teach them how to construct their lights come on
for them earlier they get home from their jobs, or how to force down
a button to regulate window blinds, music, or temperature. Or how
Bill Gates’ house works. Or how to add computerization to an existing
home, or how to build-in automation when a home is built.
Identity theft prevention. Especially because ebooks are
marketed on the Internet, this is a great topic.
This is because people who pay for the Internet are
concerned that their credit card numbers will not be visible
by others or misused in any way. Even away from the computer
though, customers are on-edge about personality theft. Today,
people are shredding their receipts, removing their personal
information from the face of their checks, and with care
covering themselves when they type in passwords at shared
terminals or ATMs. Microchips are being placed on ID cards.
People are worried. Go into this with an ebook!
Safety.
Beside the same lines as worrying about identity theft,
people are nervous about their security from other things
like crime, chemical warfare attack, and natural disasters.
Watch over the evening news tonight, and you will be able to
list at least twenty things that people are anxious of.
When you talk about safety, you are speaking their language.
Titles along the lines of be prepared for any natural
catastrophe would go over well, as would those like never
be a crime victim again, how to defend yourself in a
parking lot, or put a stop to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
How-to manuals for any new product freshly on the market.
This harks back to the Dummies series although takes it one step
further. Aim at your ebook to people who want to buy the
most current commercially obtainable item. How to use the
new model John Deere tractor. You will be sure that no
one else has a book like yours, and you can say so in
your sales pitch.
How to outlast any time of life.
People face numerous demons and battles as they live their
lives. For many, when they’re in need, they’ll be reaching
out for help. Support groups, private therapy, being with
friends, starting over – these are all solid topics for an
ebook. You could also contact specifically to certain
people needing emotional assistance. How to get through
the terrible two’s. How to survive with a cancer diagnosis.
Living with your own shortcomings. How to live with someone
who is dying. Surviving high school. Any of these will do.
Anything to do with pets.
People are pampering their pets more than ever before.
Some pets are treated well again than people. It’s the people
who spend small fortunes on their pets that will also be
willing to pay good money for an ebook that gives them
ideas on how to treat their pets even more royally
than they previously do.
Write books on how to indulge your parakeet, homemade meals
for picky dogs, where the pet spas are, how to train your
kids to be cat-friendly, million dollar homes for mutts,
which animals make the best pets, or pet psychology.
Traveling mixed with the topics above. Not only are people
traveling similar to crazy, but they want to customize their
itineraries and their methods of voyage with their hobbies
and lifestyles.
Try a few of these on for size: where to dine around the
globe and still stay on a low-carb diet plan. Hotels with
the best exercise facilities. How to travel gracefully
with large dogs. Crime-proof your campsite. Be creative.
There’s a market here.
Using the Internet to get together people. As I said, the craze
is upon us. Everyone’s online, and sometimes folks spend
more time chatting with Internet followers than they do
talking face to face with genuine friends. I know I’ve
been guilty of this one myself. Nevertheless, along with the
arrival of the World Wide Web, came people who call for a
little help figuring out how to get where they want to
get. They want to find like-minded people, find a date,
find love, find support.
There’s a huge ebook market for matching people up with
people online. Here are just a few things that could be
covered: speed dating online, virtual music jams, taking
online classes, hooking up with people who share your
hobby, and finding online support groups.
Any of these and more are of interest to people who wish
to get maximum benefit from their capability, thanks to the
Internet, to network with people in the extreme reaches
of the world. In fact one of the appeals with online
communing is that gap does not matter. Help these
people in foreign lands find each other with an ebook.
Topics of exceptional interest to women. The facts don’t lie.
Women dominate the Internet, and they spend or influence
spending of 80 cents for each money changing hands.
What women want has never been so significant to business
owners and authors.
Certain topics appeal especially to the female set.
These include beauty, well being, decorating, emotional
support, and life enrichment. Women do a few things,
generally, that men don’t. They play bunko, wear make-up,
and talk for hours to their girlfriends on the telephone.
They send more greeting cards, prepare more casseroles,
and vacuum more often than men. They eat more salads and
go shopping more often for clothes. They get more pedicures
and love to dance more than the average man.
There are two things to keep in mind with regards to women
and ebooks. If you want to attract a female market, you
need to write about a topic that women like to read about,
and you want to make the title pleasant towards women.
Here’s a female-oriented subject and label: Where to find
great shopping bargains in Taos. And here’s a male subject:
Where to catch the most fish in Taos.
Here’s a female-friendly title (same as above): Where to
find great shopping bargains in Taos. And here’s a
male-friendly title on the same subject: Respect your money
in your pocket in Taos. See the difference? Know your market,
and if you need to take between one or the other, you’re
safe going with the women’s title.
Sex.
People don’t need to sneak out of book stores with erotic
books in their hands any longer, and they know it. They are
looking on the Internet for sex materials, toys, and books.
The Internet is classified, persons can take their sweet
time, and really they can surf with or without a lover
sharing their chair. There’s been a recent ebook success
entitled Orgasms for two. There is room for more like
ebooks. On the issue of sexual characteristics, this is one case where a
fiction book may also do the mislead. You could found erotic
short stories or a how-to-have-great-sex ebook. Either ebook
would entice adults interested in this category (and incidentally,
most adults are indeed interested in this category).

Josephine Baker – The Last of the Great Nude Burleque Artists – Was the Toast of Paris in the Roaring 20s
Josephine Baker was one of the most famous acts of the early 1920′s, one of the first major black stars and one of the last famous burlesque starlets.
Early Life
Josephine Baker was born in 1906. She had what might charitivly be called a…very unique look. She was the daughter of a white or perhaps mixed race father and an African American mother who worked as a laundress in St. Louis, Missouri. Her movements were Baker’s gangling and had an endearing, goofy grin as seen in most existing photos.
She quit school at age twelve to work and by age 15 was dancing in a chorus line. By 17 she had already been married twice and it was her second husband, a Pullman railroad porter, Willie Baker, whose name she used for the rest of her life.
Taking the Stage by Storm
In 1924 Josephine won a part in the chorus of the famous Harlem Cotton Club show Chocolate Dandies. She also appeared in the Broadway revue Shuffle Along and by 1925 was appearing in Paris’s Theatre des Champ-Elysees.
Her entrance electrified the roaring 20′s audiences — she was naked except for a skirt of feathers and slung over the shoulders of a large muscular actor.
Ernest Hemingway, living in Paris at the time, called her “the most sensational woman anyone ever saw.”
When the toupe moved to Germany, Josephine stayed behind in Paris and joined the Folies Begere. She appeared in her trademark skirt — this time of phallic stuffed bananas.
Critics — Who Remembers Their Names?
Not everyone loved Baker. Critics called her dance “laughable” (the were just comic variations on the Charleston and Camel Walk) and she was harassed by racists who considered her to be inferior to the white French.
But most Parisians loved her. She was something new to them — a “simple tribal woman” who did acrobatic, semi-nude dances and made a joke of sex while staying somehow intensely provocative.
Success and Fame
Josephine married her manager (after having numerous, public affair with many of the leading men in Paris and elsewhere — though never Papa Hemingway as far as is known) and he orchestrated her later career.
Her had her name attached to several “memoirs” and “confessions” and even a novel. He had her train her voice and she recorded six songs which became hits. She made several films including Zouzou (in 1934) and Princesse Tamtam (1935). Though she was not an accomplished actress, her fame grew further.
She was also known to arrive at the set with her private zoo — including a chimp, a piglet, a goat, a snake, multiple parakeets, fish, three cats, seven dogs, and a cheetah (which wore a diamond collar and sometimes escaped, causing the crew to scatter.)
She became a French citizen in 1936 after a disasterous American tour and was active with the Resistance during World War II. She was awarded the Legion d’Honneur in 1961.
Josephine Baker died in 1975.

Bird supplies: a superb collection, and reference, too!
If you are a parrot owner, you will want to discover Chirp n Squawk Bird Supplies, the internet superstore with a huge selection of bird supplies. Found online at www.birdsupplies.com, Chirp n Squawk’s range of bird toys, bird stands, bird food, bird cages, carriers, and training materials is outstanding, and the site also features a reference section for information on all things parrot.
For instance, in an article on the site about Parrot Nutrition, you will learn that if your bird eats a food that is highly caloric, it might not be able to eat enough food to be properly nourished. Birds, like all animals, eat to meet their energy requirements. A single bird food source, provided in sufficient quantity (or too much!) may provide a bird with its daily energy needs, but deprive it of its daily nutrient needs. Let’s take a cookie, for example. A single cookie may contain as many as 200 calories, or roughly the entire daily caloric requirement for a macaw!
Now let’s look at some of the eclectic mix of bird supplies currently featured at Chirp n Squawk:
Your birds won’t be able to resist the Agabus Bird Toy from Fun Max, with its different textures and bird-loving possibilities. Plus it’s bird safe for chewing and preening, with lots of knots to untie.
Have some bird fun in your car with a hemp wrapped Car Perch; just place over the passenger seat. You can also use it on the side of a bathtub or over the arm or back of a chair.
One of the most popular bird trick toys is Bird Roller Skates! Fun Max has a cool new lightweight pair in in Harley Davidson orange!
Keep your bird supplies shiny and clean with AviClean No Rinse Cage Cleaning Formula. Its dual-enzyme extra strength cage and aviary formula cuts cage cleaning time in half! Use on floors, toys and perches.
Cultivate your bird’s inner Michael Jordan with Birdie Basketball!
Can your parrot unscrew eight stainless steel bolts located inside the indestructible, bird safe PVC circle? Blossom’s Puzzle Bird Toy challenges medium to large parrots to find out!
Carnival Kabob Bird Swing is the perfect swing for small birds like cockatiels, parakeets and lovebirds. 100% bird safe, sweet tasting, crunchy yucca strung together with sisal rope. Even the perch is yucca!
Harrison’s Adult Lifetime Course Bird Food is a daily bird food for maintaining healthy medium to large parrots. They love the natural, nutty flavor of the organic ingredients, and adore its crunchy texture.
