no they dont do well at all
I had to drive to Florida from Texas with my parakeet, i talked to her in the car and kept a cover over her cage half the time, mainly at night. When we arrived she was okay and happy.
there ARE things called ‘boarding” at pets stores and avian vets where they keep your birds at their place for a while. if there are not such places near you, take your birds with you. of course they won’t like the drive, but they will live, and a little change of scneenery is good stress compared to being alone with a bad caretaker.
my cockatiel hates being stuck in a carry-case for a 2-hour drive, and makes noise when she sees that’s where i’m gonna stick her, but she is happy to come out in my dad’s house and to visit him, but if i left her alone for one weekend she ends up with a week-long phobia of going into her cage, as if she thinks i’ll leave her there and won’t open it. if i take her with me, she comes back more active and plays with toys more from the experience of travel, even tho of course she doesn’t like the little carry case.
i know it’s not the same as a 6hour drive, but that’s where i get my oppinion from.
Transporting birds can be EXTREMELY stressful to them. I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t have to.
It really depends on the bird….. I took my parakeet on the plane with me and he did just fine. But many do not make it…… If your driving I think you will be just fine…… Just rememeber to not leave him in the heat of your car, and ensure the cage is not going to be moving around too much in your car. I think he would love the company.
I travel a lot with my birds, and here is my diverse flock;
From my personal experience, my 3 parakeets do fine with traveling (they are also used to it). I reward them with millet and make sure they can see out of their travel cage and they get out when I get out to get some real sunshine. They can have water and food the entire time and I reward them with millet every once in a while to perk them up! I find they like a little music and so forth, but every bird is different.
