Parakeets ($10-$15) are much easier & are a great starter bird. They are perfectly happy alone and don’t need a flock to feel at home (just a little mirror). They don’t mind being handeled.
Canaries ($100 & up) are in the finch family & have a very delicate respitory system. Finches are much less hardy and need a “flock”. Remember, the bigger the flock, the bigger the cage. Plus, they do not enjoy being handeled unless they were hand raised.
      Stick to a parakeet.

Pet stores are the worst places to purchase a bird. The ones in the big chain stores are often sick.

First, look for a breeder in your area. Then go visit the facility to determine the clenliness.

Budgies should cost $30-$50 depending on breed and mutation.

Canaries will cost $50 and up.

Canaries will live in the cage and rarely come out. Budgies can be trained to be handled.

Feeding and caging requirements are different for both.

What kind/size of cage do you have?
How much time do you have to spend with the bird daily?
What kind of toys do you have available, or what kind can you purchase?

Do not use TEFLON pans in a home with a bird. They release a fume when heated that kills birds. Scented candles and air fresheners are also a no no.

Do research on both breeds before you purchase, and if you have questions, please feel free to email me.

if you want to hold them then get a parakeet. Canaries are really not for holding. If you want to hold parekeets then they have to be tamed. I do not knoe of anyone having a tamed canary
Parakeet…..cheepest you can find it for $15 – 20 (check your local classifieds)
      Canaries…. price depends on the color/breed…usually $30 – $100.
