How to care for a parakeet?
Category: Parakeet Community
I have a parakeet and she preens all the time. I have sprayed her with mite and lice spray and I have a mite/lice can hanging on her cage. I clean her cage twice a week and keep her water dish full of clean water. Am I caring for my parakeet correctly? What else can I do to keep her clean…oh, she does enjoy bathing in my bathroom sink under a trickle of running water. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

yea mate.
everything seems great.
how about…
letting her out of her cage once a day or something?
make sure all the doors/windows are locked. :]
It sounds like you are doing a great job, caring for her. Preening is a sign that they are happy and satisfied. Cheers.
Sounds good. I usually just clean the cage once a week but twice is great. Preening is normal. Parakeets spend most of their day preening. Unless your parakeet is getting bald spots or you can see mites, the mite/lice stuff is unnecessary because preening a lot does not mean that she has mites/lice. My birds like to eat sliced apples and oranges and nibble on fresh corn cobs. Parakeets keep themselves clean.
