- parakeets are fun birds – feel free to email me with any questions -
Parakeets love avocado! I hope this helps.
Its pretty simple really… Love, fresh water, clean cage, safe draft-free environment and love.
The more attention you pay to a bird the more attention they will pay to you.
I have heard of parakeets talking… I think its the males that talk more than the females… but in any case paying lots of attention to your pet is the best chance you have at developing this side of their personality.
Food… I am a huge advocate for pelleted foods. Its a complete nutritional package for them. Talk to the folks at your local bird store for the best variety suited for parakeets. I also know a few Keet owners that “attach” a hunk of broccoli to the cage…. even an apple piece. They generally dont eat a tremendous amount of it.. but it is good for them and they do eat some. They also love cuttlebone (good calcium source) and millet sprays.
Cage…. if you are going to be diligent about keeping both of your birds wings trimmed you can get a smaller cage and leave the door open during the day. This enables them to use the whole cage as a playground. This does depend on the bird (and if you have other pets in the house) When birds sleep they prefer a smaller cage….. they like to be covered and feel secure. If you are unable to keep your birds feathers trimmed then you have to keep the door closed and with that keep them in a larger cage. In either case lots of toys. Get in the habit of buying a lot of toys but only putting a couple in the cage. When you notice your keet not playing with a toy as much swap it out for one you have set aside. It keeps their little minds active. You will quickly learn what your bird likes the most. Keep the cage clean. Mold and mildew and various bacteria can form in a soiled cage. Keeping your birds area clean helps the air quality that they have to breathe all day long.
Dont burn incense or scented candle or use air fresheners around your bird. This can cause sickness and possibly death. Also do not keep your bird’s cage near the kitchen. non-stick surfaces give off a toxic gas to birds (its toxic to humans to… only in much larger doses). Make sure your bird has access to fresh air… even outside (in a closed cage) is great for them.
Above all is common sense. Read on the internet about them… get some books from the library.
As for names…. short names always work the best. Go with something fun that your bird will respond to. Names ending in “E” sound tend to be ones that birds can say and react to. Other than that pick something you both can enjoy.
Enjoy your feathered friend!
