   Training parakeets is best done in a small room without anything in them, when I got my budgerigar the salesperson told me to dry out the shower, pull the curtain and put the plug in. This was quite effective.
   Do not use your bare hand to remove the bird from his cage, it makes them afraid of your hand. Place a small cloth over your parakeet and pick them up with it.
   Hold him in your hand and press on his belly with your finger and say, in a cheery sort of voice, “step up!” he should step onto your finger.
   Work in a corner so that he cannot fly away and when he jumps off of your finger pick him up and try again.
