I need urgent parakeet training and taming tips!?

    Category: Parakeet Training

My parakeet, Lucky, is tame but not so tame. I can take him out with no fuss, he wont bite, he is not a bad bird. But I have two other parakeets who are really scared and I want them to be tamed. I can take them out too, but Lucky and the other parakeets are scared of me. Help!
P.S. Can you tell me some tricks I could teach my budgies? Thanks!

You didn’t state how these birds were housed. Are they all in the same cage together? If so, you would be better off seperating them into their own cages so that they are more apt to bond with you and not each other.

You will have to train each bird seperately so this will take some time, you cannot be in a hurry as the birds will sense this and become tense and not want to bond with you. So be as relaxed as possible and if you feel yourself becoming impatient, then end the training session.

If your birds wing’s are not trimmed then I would do this for the initial training period, take them to your vet or pet store as birds have blood feathers that can cause them to bleed to death if you cut one accidently and if you are not familiar with this then it is best to have someone else show you how.

I also recommend clicker training, there is a Yahoo Group called BirdClick that I am providing a link to.

It sounds like you already have all of your parakeets finger tamed if you’re able to take them out of the cage. Since you can get them out of their cages, you have already built up some trust with the birds. This is a good thing.

Some things that should help calm the birds is for you to talk to them. Move slowly around them. Don’t chase them around or grab them. Try gently scooping them off the floor if they fly away. You didn’t mention if your parakeets’ wings are clipped. If they aren’t clipped, I highly recommend getting their wings clipped for easier care and taming.

I’ve taught some of my parakeets to do somersaults on my finger and on their perches. Many parakeets enjoy clowning around and doing somersaults. I had one of my parakeets trained so well that all I had to do was move my finger and she’d perform a sommersault. Basically, all I did was start moving the parakeet forward by pushing gently on his back with my left index finger (the bird is sitting on my right index finger). Some birds catch on to this quickly, like the female I talked about, others can take quite some time to get into doing this. If the bird protests too much, just stop. You can always try again some other time. I never force my parakeets to do anything they don’t want to do.

There are many ways to train parakeets. I’m going to give you a link to read that I think works the best:
