Parakeet Cages - How To Choose One
You want your house to protect you from harm, keep you away from danger, give you comfort, and provide you with fun things to do. You should also consider those things when it comes to choosing parakeet cages.
Parakeets like to have room for toys as well as enough space to fly around inside the cage. That is why they need to live in a spacious cage with plenty of room and choosing a good sized cage for your bird is imperative.
Also, buy a cage that is made from safe materials such as stainless steel or a safe metal (no lead or zinc or brass) that is powder-coated because parakeets often chew on their cage. You should also make sure that the cage is strong and does not have any sharp or pointed parts. Parakeets are smart birds, so if you buy a cage with a door that slides up and down, secure these doors shut with quick links, twist ties, or pipe cleaners. Some parakeets will try to go out and their head might get stuck under the door.
Choose a rectangular cage because it makes parakeets feel safe when resting in corners. Cage bars should also be spaced closely so that parakeets would not stick their head out and risk injury. There should also be horizontal bars so that parakeets can climb up and down when they get bored.
Parakeet cages with removable trays, large doors, small doors for feeding materials, and built in seed dishes can make cleaning easier.
Place the cage in a bright place on a bird cage stand. Do not place the cage in the kitchen because fumes are very dangerous to parakeets. Teflon cooking pans that emit smoke because of overheating can kill your pet parakeet.
Lastly, make sure that the cage is in a place where people in your house usually hang out so your bird can feel like they are part of the family. Also you should be sure to put several toys inside the cage so that your pet parakeets can stay active and amused.
