Laughter Is The Best Medicine For Anxiety, Too

We all have heard this adage so many times that the meaning is lost on us now.  However, this is indeed wisdom that you should give due importance. Anxiety is in one way the opposite of happiness or laughter. By this definition, it would make sense that if you laughed often enough anxiety would not be able to establish a hold on you. However, what if the anxiety already got hold on you? Could you reverse the condition with laughter? Yes, you can.

Laughter therapy is today accepted and promoted by traditional doctors because it is indeed able to do miracles. Just by laughing aloud about 10-20 minutes every day, you would reduce your blood pressure, heart problems, and respiratory problems and boost your immune system. How does this work? Laughter promotes the production of endorphins or the feel-good hormones, which in turn relax the body and mind.

Laughter also regulated the function of the endocrine glands, whereby the hormones production in the body is regularized. Hormones, as you all know, are what keep our systems functioning properly; once the hormone production is optimal, all the systems in the body perform optimally. The result is that you look, are and feel healthy.

You should seriously consider taking up the laughter therapy and laugh aloud for about 10-20 minutes every day.  Initially, it would be difficult to laugh without any reason. This is why laughter therapy works best when practiced in groups. For best results you need at least five-six people who would get together and laugh loudly; there would be a leader who stands in front of the group and laughs loudly asking the group to follow him or her, just as a lead would do in aerobics or any such exercises. Just because everyone would look so silly, people who would initially laugh forcefully would gradually enjoy themselves enough to have a good laugh.

    ]]>

In case the laughter therapy does not appeal to you or you are unable to practice this, there are other ways to ensure that laughter becomes an integral part of your daily life. Here are ten easy and effective suggestions:

    1.    Read jokes on or off the Net

    2.    See a comedy once in a while

    3.    Learn to laugh at yourself; you will never run out of reasons to laugh

    4.    Learn to look for the lighter side of any situation; it would take a while initially, but after a     while, you would be able to instantly see the funny part even in the worst of situations

    5.    Nurture relationships with people who laugh easily and are projecting happiness around them

    6.    Avoid morose, pessimist type of people, unless you feel you could help them cross over to the humorous     side

    7.    Make it a point to do something that you love and gives you happiness, at least once a week. Every     three months treat yourself with a small gift and once in a year have an outing with your friends     (exclude your spouse, if he or she does not match this circle) and have a blast.

    8.    Introduce a pet into your home and life. Anything would do – a fish, cat, parakeet, dog, badger,     rabbit, lizard, frog, snake and what-you-may-have. As you learn to appreciate this being, you would     feel relaxed and happy just by watching the animal(s).  The pet therapy has been proved as being one     of the best boosters of ‘the will to live’. When senior people were introduced to pets, their memory,     health and overall disposition improved considerably. People ailing with terminal diseases started     responding to medication; depressed patients made a faster transition, and stressed out people felt     more relaxed in the company of animals.

    9.    Look around you and start a ‘I want to help’ chain. Help someone you know who needs help; instead of     accepting their thanks, ask them to help someone they felt needed help and so on. It is amazing what a     little kindness can do to your life and that of others.

    10.    Do a good deed every week just as a regular feature. Helping others gives you a sense of achievement     and fulfillment that no professional or personal accomplishment can equal. When you know you can make     a difference, however humble this would be, in somebody’s life you would feel a sweet, quiet inner     happiness that cannot be compared with any other.

Humor has been accepted as a great catalyst in medicine, a fact endorsed by umpteen research studies on a huge repertoire of diseases, especially serious disorders. Train your mind to see the lighter side of life and you will find that when you open the door to laughter, the one leading to worry and anxiety is shut tight.

    Finding Your Best Pet Friend

Finding the perfect pet friend to make your life complete depends on several different considerations. Choosing a domestic animal to cohabit with is not only a matter of the heart, but also a very practical matter of the mind. You must do some serious soul-searching and take inventory of your life as is before even deciding to adopt a pet of any type. First you must determine whether you would be a good pet owner. Have you had pets before? Do you know how to take care of the type of pet you are considering? Taking care of a cat is different than taking care of a dog or bird or even a goldfish. Consider your current lifestyle. Will a pet fit in? Are you home enough to devote the time that a pet requires? Are there children or other pets in your home that must be considered? Can you afford the financial responsibility of taking care of a household pet? You must also consider who will care for your pet when you are traveling, whether for business or vacation.

If you have taken complete inventory of your life and are able to confidently affirm that you are ready to adopt a pet for life, the guide below will help steer you in the right direction in terms of finding the pet that will fit you best.

    Dogs

Puppies and dogs alike require more time and attention than other types of pets. Even the most passive of the canine breed will need walks more than once a day as well as adequate playtime daily. In addition, dogs may require obedience training. Many people prefer dogs to other types of pets because they can be trained to protect the home or do tricks that amuse and impress humans. However, training your animal to do what you want takes a lot of skill and effort and does not (by any means) happen by itself. Taking care of a dog is a lot of work. In addition to feeding, walking (which means picking up after) and training, dogs must be bathed and groomed. This means that you will either find yourself struggling with a wiggly, breathless pup in the tub, or that you will shell out wads of cash for someone else to do your dirty work.

As much work as caring for a dog may be, many people find the trouble to be well worth it. Dogs are excellent companions and actually build a strong bond with their owners. Dogs of different breeds and varieties exhibit various different qualities and personality traits, making it pretty easy to find the perfect one for you (if you look long enough).

    Cats

Cats are known to have more independent, discriminating personalities. Felines will largely take care of themselves, requiring little to no bathing or grooming on your part. Cats are extremely easy to house-train and are generally very clean animals. Cats tend to be better pets for households where nobody is home for the majority of the day. Some cats, however, do require much attention and affection by way of petting and playing. Even with cats mostly taking care of themselves, there will be expenses to consider. Every cat will need its own food and water bowls as well as its own kitty litter box, litter, food, shots and more.

    Birds

There are many varieties of birds that make good pets for humans. Some of these include parakeets, finches or canaries. More exotic breeds found in homes are cockatoos and parrots. Birds tend to be pretty low-maintenance, but like other pets do require some care on your part. In addition to feeding and providing water, you will need to clean the bird’s cage regularly and provide toys for its entertainment.

    Other Pets

Other common pets in U.S. households include guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, rabbits, iguanas, turtles, fish and others. With each of these types of pets it is very important to educate yourself on the care requirements and time/money commitments required.

    Choosing Your Type of Pet

Whether you do all the reading and research on different types of pets or know from the very beginning (in your gut) which type of pet is right for you, you will eventually figure out if a cat, dog or other type of animal is right for you and your home. Once you have decided what you want to get, you must prepare you home. Go to your local library and look for a book on how to prepare your home for the type of pet you plan to get. You can also find online guides to help you prepare for your new family member. Once you have pet-proofed your home and stocked up on all the comforts to make your new pet feel at home, you’re ready to start looking!

    Adopt a Pet

Though pets of all types can easily be found in pet stores, adopting a pet from your local animal shelter, an animal foster home or even from a family that can no longer keep its pet is best. By adopting rather than buying a pet, you will be providing a home for an animal that may otherwise run into an unfavorable fate. Also, adopting a pet in need of a home is very likely to be more affordable than buying a puppy or kitten from a pet store. Check you local SPCA Web site to see if animals available for adoption are listed. Many times these sites include pictures of the critters that are looking for homes.

Don’t forget to reach out to your local community. Many times families have to give up pets due to circumstances that are out of their control. They may find themselves having to move into a home where animals are not allowed. Perhaps a member of the family has developed an uncontrollable allergy to the family pet. In these cases, families may be looking for good homes for the pets they have lovingly cared for up until now. By checking your local classifieds or bulletin boards at your pet supply store, you can connect with these families and possibly find your perfect pet!

A guide about the best and probably easiest way to tame your new pet bird

A lot of patience is needed on your part to achieve this, and the taming process needs to begin whilst the bird is still young and has not yet learned to be afraid of people. It can be done with an adult bird but is usually much more of a challenge.

Some bird breeds however do tend to be a little more difficult to tame (finches for example), they’ll sit on your hand or finger ok but would often rather get away from you, and are less likely to take food offerings (unfortunately I don’t know why that is so) but my findings are based on my own personal experience with these birds so if you’ve had better luck or you get better look with this then good for you! (Please let me know how you‘ve managed it, I‘d love to learn where I’m going wrong). Most parrot-like species (budgies, cockatiels etc) however are a different matter and will readily take to hand taming as long as this is approached in the correct manner.

Remember that whilst trying to tame your pet bird sudden movements or loud noises are a no no, you don’t want to frighten the poor thing, talk softly, move slowly and don’t shout at your bird, even if it does misbehave.

Whilst your bird is still very young, has only very recently flown the nest, and has not yet gained enough confidence to fly away is the best time to start the taming process.

Take your bird in hand or use your finger or hand as a perch and allow your bird to step onto it. Talk softly to your bird all the time as you are doing this, tell him or her what a good boy or girl they are for example. Give your bird time to get used to this and gradually move your hand around the cage and hopefully your bird will stay put. Offer some food stuffs and if your bird takes them it’s a sign that at the moment it is putting its trust in you. After a while, say 5 minutes, return it to its normal perch and then leave it there and talk to it again from the outside of its enclosure for a minute or two, your bird will need to learn to trust the sound of your voice. Say goodbye then go away and leave your pet bird to its own devices for a few hours.

Do this several times a day, every day, until you feel it is confident enough to stay with you outside its cage. Your birds cage is its home and is the place where your bird feels at its safest, so if you try to take your bird out of its cage it may just jump off your hand or finger back into its safe place. Be persistent but be patient also, remember your bird has already learned to put its trust in you and it will only be a matter of time before it feels safe enough for you to remove it from its home. Learn what is your birds favourite food treat and use it as a prize for being good (much like taming or training any animal). Again you must interact and try these methods regularly throughout each day, but don’t overdo it, your bird will need to rest awhile between its taming sessions.

Soon you and your bird will have enough confidence in each other to allow you to perhaps walk about your home with your bird on your shoulder for example (pieces of eight), or your bird will follow you about. Eventually it will look forward to its daily human interaction and so will you.

Remember to be sure that if removing your bird from its cage not to give it any means to escape outside; close windows, doors and curtains, turn off the ceiling fan (don’t want chopped bird do we), and try and restrict your taming to one room that your pet bird cannot escape from. Eventually you may be able to allow your bird the run of the house but you must still be sure to not leave any escape routes.

Be sure to do some bird taming every day, don’t put it off, because if you miss your sessions then after a while your bird will lose its trust in you.

Be persistent and confident and do these things very regularly and sooner of later your pet bird will be fully confident with you and not nervous.

More information will be available in my new ebook coming soon, email me to reserve your copy or to ask any bird keeping related questions. I will try and answer as soon and as honestly as possible.
