They can even learn around 2,000 words if trained well. They are smart but they also tend to be demanding. They will get bored and lonely if you will not take time to engage them in stimulating activities. Your efforts will surely be rewarded because these are affectionate in nature.

So choose from the list what you want to acquire as pet birds. Make sure that as much as you will enjoy their presence, you will also be able to give them what they require from you.

Parrot Birds Tips – Choosing A Cage For The Parrot

If you have a desire to keep a parrot at your home, then the foremost contemplation should be an enclosure where it is to be kept. Keep in mind that the habitat of the parrot directly influences its health. It should be obvious that every parrot possessor will like to keep the parrot in an enclosure. But remember that the cage should be spacious as it requires good space to live in. This will help in the growth of the parrot.

When you are going to buy a cage then always look for a good and right dimension. This should be understood that all types of parrot cannot be kept in the similar cage. The specie of the parrot also determines which type of an enclosure you should have. So, before you buy a parrot it should be well understood that which type of cage should be selected so that the parrot can be kept in their satisfactorily.

There are many varieties of cages with so many different sizes which you can wonder. But, the specie of the parrot very much affects the type and the size of the cage. For instance, the specie of a parrot like an African Grey or the Blue Crown Conjure requires a cage with a size of 18x18x18 inch. Also for an Eclectic Parrot and the Senegal Parrot, the same dimensions mentioned above would be perfect. In this way different parrots have varying cage dimensions.

The dimensions of an enclosure may vary with the specie of many parrots. For instance, for the parrots like the Amazon Parrot, the Quaker Parrot or the Macaws the cage dimensions of about 30x30x30 inch would work. Also, for the Umbrella Cockatoos, some dimension of about 36x30x72 inch would be ok. For a Conjure a cage with size measurement of around 20x20x24 inch would be fine in order to keep your parrot cheerful, relaxed and healthy.

There are many kinds of parrots seen and they too have distinct sizes of an enclosure. If you keep the Coffin Cockatoo as a pet then the cage should have a preferable size of around 48x36x48 inch.  The same dimensions would also be good for the Moluccas Cockatoo.  Now for the Rose Breasted Cockatoo then you should go for the cage dimensions of around 36x36x36 inch.  The parrots which are small in nature can stay in an enclosure of around 18x22x24 inches. For instance the parrot Quaker Parakeet is of this type. For different other tiny species like Cockatiels and Budgies the cage dimensions of around 18x18x24 inches and 20x12x18 inches respectively would be fine. Remember that the entrance of the cage should be good and big so that the parrot can enter and exit from the cage easily.

The devices that you use while serving food and water to the parrots also play an important role other than the cage dimensions. You must keep things such as cups to serve water to the parrots and also toys so that the parrot can catch these things from inside of the cage very easily.

Pet Birds – How to Make Good Use of Everyday Things to Give Your Pet Birds Variety

To give your pet birds variety to enhance their lives you can make good use of everyday stuff that you find in your own environment. Some household items and human foods can help your birds to live a more interesting life. What’s more, watching your pet birds when their curiosity gets the better of them and they decide to investigate the new intrusion into their environment can be a rather entertaining experience. Many everyday things can help your pet birds to live a more natural existence.

They are very curious individuals by nature so anything you give them will undoubtedly be investigated thoroughly once your pet birds are aware of its existence. With this in mind you must be certain that anything you give to them will not cause any harm.

Also you will find that many so called ‘human’ foods can be eaten by your birds as long as you determine beforehand what is good or bad for them. This coupled with everyday stuff you find lying around in your home or your local area can be incorporated into their lives to add variety for them and sometimes entertainment for yourself.

For example my birds love toast, so if I am having toast for breakfast (or any other meal for that matter) I often also do a slice especially for my aviary birds. However I do have a lot of them in my aviary so one slice of toast soon gets eaten up quickly, but if you have just one pet bird or just a few then a little bit of toast from your own meal or snack would be more suitable. Of course it will do no harm as it is mainly composed of wheat flour and little else.

    ]]>

Of course this is not the only ‘human’ food they can eat; your birds can eat many everyday foods as long as the food will be suitable for their digestive systems and general health. Try them with carrots, my parrot type birds (budgerigars and cockatiels) love them, however the finches are not that interested but do love almost any type of seed or fruit (sesame seed and melon for example).

However you should not give them coffee, chocolate, meat or any food with a high fat content. Common sense should play a big part in deciding what to give them, if it’s not very good for you it certainly will not be good for your pet birds. If you are unsure what foods they can or cannot eat then it is advisable to consult the internet or an avian professional beforehand.

On the other matter I would advise you not to go out and pay a lot of money for toys for your birds as this can considerably increase the cost of their upkeep. However many things in your everyday life can and will be used to keep your birds entertained and encourage them to be more active.

For example a basic swing made up from a piece of scrap timber and a bit of rope will be an adequate alternative to a shop bought swing. Your pet birds will not know the difference and as long as you give the materials a good scrub down (no detergents please) first and they contain no paints or varnishes they will be fine.

Any old bits of twigs, broken plastic childrens toys (as long as they’re safe, no small bits to fall off etc.), and just about anything else you can think of will be suitable for your birds to play with as long as they are cleaned thoroughly first and are safe. Pet birds, especially parrot type species, love to chew so be sure that anything they do chew will cause them no harm, and could save a fortune in the long run.

As always, if you are unsure then the advice of an avian professional should be sought.

In summary you should feed your birds a wide variety of different foods which will help their health, and offer a variety of other stimulants to enhance their lifestlyes.

    Outdoor Accommodation – Birds Aviary

If you are far into the aviculture, probably you will feel the inevitability to have more specimens. If you have bird rooms or aviaries, you can have a great numbers of birds in different variations.

There are different suggestions for housing various birds- from parrots to finches.

There are a lot of types aviaries – already built in flat pack so they are very convenient. But also they are very expensive.

When you choose an aviary be sure that it is practical and has all the basic needs:birds need shelter to get out in bad weather, you need a safety porch for access without the possibility birds to fly away and also there should be  a roof against wild bird droppings and other elements. Also the aviary should look nice and be functional.

Of course it will be cheaper and unique if you make it yourself. For getting ideas how it to look like you may use ready-made aviaries. To build your own aviary you have to obtain good DIY skills or you may use ready-made panels- 6ft high and 3ft wide, they are easy to work with.

    Design

Aviary’s design depends on what are birds you are going to keep, the available space and the materials for building it.

If you have finches then a wooden house for them is good, but for more destructive birds as cockatoos and other hookbill birds as budgies and macaws you will need a metal frame.

The birds you have determine the size of the mesh. For finches, budgies and cockatiels it should be square 1/2inch by 1/2 inch, it is safer. For them the thinner 19G (gauge) mesh is proper. 16G mesh is good for senegals and conures, 14G or 12G mesh is good for macaws and cockatoos; 2 by 2 inch is suitable for the larger parrots and often it is cheaper.

The shelter can be added as a box, attached to the top or you’d better have bird room or a shed that has an indoor flight and allows birds to fly during bad weather. It is also recommended that there should be a selection of perches for the birds to sleep at night. The flight inside the shed will be not as large as the main flight, birds use it for exercises. During good weather in warm seasons the birds may sleep where they want, but in winter or at cold nights they have to be shut. Birds can get in through a stable door whose top is open or through a pop-hole.

The shelter could be wooden or from bricks and can be easily adapted and insulated. There should be enough light via windows or if it is not sufficient there should be artificial lighting or a mix of both so birds can feel comfortable to be fed and the owner can  work in the evening.

Temperature is also very important, especially for the most fragile birds. You can choose tubular convector heaters with built in thermostats for the temperature or separate heater-thermostat units.

For the good health of your birds also air filters or ionizers would help. They remove feather dust from the air, which is dangerous for people suffering from asthma.

    Choosing The Site

Place the aviary far from trees against falling leaves and branches, but put it in sight of the house and to a direction where morning sunlight comes from. Leave a room around it so in the future if you decide to expand it to have that opportunity. Set the aviary away from the main roads because if you do not consider it, your birds could be startled by the car lights and they are exposed to a risk from the opportunist thief.

Also you should discuss your ideas with your neighbors and check with local authorities if planning permission is needed.

Put down a solid footing against predators and for hygiene reasons. If you have soil floor it is perfect breeding ground for bacteria parasites and is difficult for cleaning .The best solution is concrete, never mind that it is permanent. Predators can not dig it and it is ideal for disinfection. It you are put off its permanent feature, consider the alternative to lay slabs, they have almost the same effect but they are less permanent.

After the footing is set, it is time for the aviary panels. Put a layer of brickwork round the bottom and drill holes 1ft from either end in the panels. Then it is easy to fix the panels together with nuts and bolts. That way they are easy to be dismantled if they have to be moved or replaced. The best method is to fix first the shelter and then to fix the panels to it.

    Risks

Predators like birds of prey, rodents, mice, rats and other, foxes, snakes and cats are the enemies of the birds and you have to think about buying ultra-sonic devices which are harmless to your birds, they emit radio waves that scare off the predators.Good hygiene, laying traps and cleaning up spilt seed will help you against rodents and  also snakes will be kept away if you place panels on brick work.

Treat your birds for parasites at least once a year .Regular disinfecting and cleaning will reduce the risk if illness.

You should do something against thieves and the elements, too. You aviary should be built sturdy and locks to every door should be fitted. Motion sensitive security lighting and a high quality security alarm are good investment .These preventative measures should deter the thieves .It will be hard for you to control the elements so offer a shelter and keep birds warm and dry.

    Check List

Before introducing birds in your own built aviary, allocate a section listing needed things.

Neighbors’ approval and permission to build

Proper site with plenty of room

The right frame and wire for the  birds

    Shelter for the birds

    Solid floor

    Feed and Cage Birds

As many bird enthusiasts know, there’s a lot more to keeping a bird than just providing seed. Birds require a well-balanced diet, a clean habitat, and toys to keep them occupied.

    Bird food

Create a diet for your bird that includes no more than 50% seed and has few, if any, fattening seeds like sunflower or safflower. Include a wide range of greens like lettuce and broccoli. Birds also benefit from potatoes and carrots.

Be sure to feed your bird pellets. Pellets have all the nutrition and roughage that birds need. Some common brands of pellets are Vetafarm pellets, Wombaroo pellets, and Kaytee pellets.

Vitamins are a good idea if your bird is sick, breeding, or molting.

    Birdcages

A birdcage should be wide enough for the bird to spread its wings and fly. Long, rectangular birdcages are better than tall ones because most birds can’t fly up as easily as forward. There are a wide variety bird cages, including vintage and specialty cages for both small- and large-breed birds on eBay.

Birdcages for large-breed birds, such as parrots and macaws, are substantially different from smaller bird cages for smaller birds, such as parakeets and finches. They are made of a thicker metal. Make sure that the bird has plenty of room to spread its wings, and that there is room for multiple perches and plenty of bird toys. Also, many large-breed birds are very intelligent and have been known to unlock locks and untwist bolts, so an investment in a quality cage is well worth it.

    Bird toys

Bird toys, such as mirrors, bells, swings, ladders, and chew toys, are an essential addition to any cage. They provide exercise, entertainment, and can keep your bird occupied while you’re away—which is particularly important for keeping large breed birds content and out of trouble.

    Bird egg incubators

Bird egg incubators are essential if you’re planning on breeding your birds. Different bird breeds will have different needs as far as incubation is concerned, so make sure you research how your breed would care for its eggs and what kind of incubator would be best suited for your needs.

A Brief Guide to Finch Birds

All families of finch birds make astounding family pets. How do I know this? I raise and breed finches myself. Through both personal, hands-on experience and studying finches over the years, I know the pleasure of raising finches. I believe that the joy derived from raising finches is worth the labor it takes to care for and feed these small birds. It is my absolute pleasure to share what I know about raising finches with you. I can only hope that my enthusiasm for finches will rub off on you.

In any pet shop selling birds you can securely bet that there will be people gathered around the finches. People find finches magical, perhaps because of their songs and activity. Some, like the Gouldian Finch, are colorful and bold while others, like the popular Zebra Finch, are more muted in coloration but there is no bird of this species that doesn’t in some way catch one’s eye.

Finches are energetic, always moving about their enclosure. You rarely can find them sitting quietly on their perch. Finches in no way seem to run out of vigor as they follow each other around their habitat all day long.

You should also find that finches are voracious eaters. Each bird will down approximately a third of its body weight in food every day. Mostly, finches consume a diet of small seeds. Like many birds, finches are omnivores, eating diets rich in plant life as well as small insects and pupae. They gravitate to green, leafy vegetables, cut-up fruit, mealworms and other insect pupae.

Their aviary should be big enough for them to fly around, longer than it is wide and without frills. Finches typically take no interest in toys, ladders, mirrors or bells; those are things that parrots and parakeets find thrilling and finches tend to ignore. Oh yes, you should not expect your finch to be tame like a parrot or parakeet either; they mostly will not sit on your finger or eat from your hand. If they take off their enclosure you’ll follow them for hours trying to recapture them.

If you are new to finches and thinking about getting a pair of birds for your home, I recommend you begin with Zebra, Spice or Society finches. These groups of finches are largely easy to care for, tend to be hardy and will be easy to breed at home. They also are the cheapest to buy.

As pets, finches engage themselves with song and motion all day long. While they are entertaining themselves they are also entertaining you. I can sit for hours watching these little creatures live together in peace and harmony, singing to each other, grooming themselves and their mates, splashing around in the birdbath and generally enjoying themselves.

Raising finches comes with a deep obligation to see to the health and well-being of your birds. It is an awesome responsibility but one that is easily carried out when you have the tools to care for these wonderful little birds.

Gregg Bowers raises finches for fun and profit. He has done so for over ten years and shares his knowledge of finches including raising finch birds as pets with you. Gregg is currently giving away as a free gift his powerful email mini-course, A Step-by-Step Guide to Raising Happy, Healthy Finches with absolutely no obligation just for the asking. If you are serious about raising happy, healthy finches then you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
