How long should it take a budgie to lay an egg? I think my bird might be egg bound.?
Category: Parakeet Health
I’m worried that my female parakeet, Sprite (there are alot of birds named Sprite for some reason o.O), is egg bound. She’s about four years old and she’s usually very chunky. She started behaving strangely about a week ago. She was under weight (she has lost all her extra fat and she’s thinner than any of my other birds now) and she stayed on the floor of her cage excessively. I examined her and put her into a seperate cage (after removing the grate from the floor) with a heating pad under it for a few days. I usually keep her in the same cage with my other parakeets. I have four males and two females. She still can perch but she stays puffed up on the floor alot. She also eats and drinks regularly. I noticed earlier that she had a marble sized lump near her vent. I would assume that’s an egg. Apparantly egg binding is obvious. I think she’s alright if it’s supposed to take a few hours to get an egg out. I’m pretty damn sure laying an egg isn’t one of those things that happens in the blink of an eye. I’m just trying to make sure this is normal for my bird. Thanks for reading/answering this.
can parakeets that dont normally lay eggs become egg bound?

My parakeet may be egg bound. Is it time for me to intervene?
Category: Parakeet Health
She’s about 5 years old and has never been bred. We added a male this year (in May) and she’s been acting “nesty” for the last month. By that, I mean she goes in and out of the nesting box and digs around in there for HOURS).
Today she’s on her swing but is acting very sluggish, putting her head under her wing, has her eyes closed and every now and again, she’s straining to push. Her vent is swollen, she’s pulled the feathers out around it and she can’t seem to push “poop” out either. I have not intervened yet, but I am willing. Any advice?
Thanks in advance from me and Tweedy.
Beth P….thanks for your time and answer. I wanted to tell you that she’s actually pushing out some very dark stringy droppings right now. They hang and she pulls them off. Does this mean something?
Okay. Tweedy and Bud (I have nowhere else to put him) are in the bathroom, heater on, shower running. It’s like a steam bath in there. Bad news on one front….no avian vet. Our Doc is a cattle man, he pulls calves, not eggs. The nearest bird specialist is God only knows where, so that’s out. I’ll try everything else, though. Thanks for taking us seriously everyone. It means an awful lot to me.
8:00am central…no change. They’re still in a VERY warm bathroom and I run steam every time the hot water heater recharges. She’s alert, but clearly miserable. I sure messed up on this one.
Final Update: Well everyone, I took your advice and found an avian vet in the city. I made an appointment and took Tweedy in.
Doc said I had 3 choices.
1. Take her home where she would die
2. Let him put her down humanely
3. Let him surgically remove the egg.
I chose number 3. He said she had a 50/50 chance but he was happy I chose the procedure. He first fed her by tube because he said her energy was spent. Then after an hour or so he anesthetized her and made a small incision; then removed an egg the size of the end of his thumb (he said). He stitched her and waited for her to wake up and when she did he called me to tell me. He’s keeping her over night because he said she was not eating on he own yet and her wanted to tube feed her again to make sure she received nutrition. The good news is…it looks like we dodged the bullet. Thanks to every one for being so adamant about getting professional help. Tweedy and I thank you from the bottoms of our hearts!
what do you do if a parakeet seems to be egg bound and swollen?

My bird is a parakeet, and you might say shes a bit older, but shes all red and swollen around her private areas, so I don’t know what to do. We tried putting pressure around the top of where the egg might be, but nothing happened. Help..?
Shes over 7 years old, and there had been a male in the cage before, but it was a long time ago. I don’t know what to do, and we have no money for vets. Steam didn’t help. And we put her in a box and made it like a nest. What should I do now? Whatever is wrong with her has been like the for 4 days now. I really need help. She isnt active and she eats only enough to surrive. Shes been a part of the family for awhile, and we really don’t want to loose her.

PLEASE HELP ME!!!
I have 3 parakeets, 2 female and one male. I’ve seen one of the females mating with the male quite often so I’ve been thinking she was pregnant.(She is about 2.5 years old with a big bulge near her vent) Anyways, lately I’ve seen her pooping out HUGE wet droppings, with the diameter of a small marble! Also, she has been on the floor a lot lately and her tail bobs. It wasn’t until I saw a little bit of pink flesh on her vent area that I began to really worry, I got them from someone when they were about 1.5 year old already, so they still don’t trust me to come near them. :’(
She has kind of droopy flying which I think the egg(s) is weighing her down. I did some research on it and it said to warm her up and wipe poop off her vent if necessary, but they won’t let me near them and I don’t have any portable heating supplies! I don’t know how long she’s been like this because I went on a school camping trip in which my sister took care of them for me. PLEASE HELP ME! And don’t tell me to go to a vet because my parents can’t really afford it. :’(
My parakeet in danger? (Possible egg bound)?
Category: Parakeet Health
I have a female, she’s the oldest parakeet of the now of the 4 at age 4. She’s UNTRAINED and would get no where near me. A male bird has been ‘doing it’ with her for quite sometime. Another male bird that I lost used to ‘do her’ in the past without any success (had a breeding box and everything and she did the usual signs). However now she’s become lethargic, has poop on the end of her backside which I’ve tried to spray off at the very least but she just develops more. She’s pulled all the feathers from her backside and she’s fluffed up (sign of distress).
Is she egg bound? What can I do, too late?
