How to get Budgies or Parakeets to start eating vegetables?
Category: Parakeet Care
I have never had any problem when it comes to feeding my parakeets vegetables or fruits. But this was due to certain circumstances and I would like to let you know these circumstances so that you can also follow them and make your Pet birds to eat vegetables and fruits.
First of all I never had just one bird at home, I have always had more than five, including lovebirds, parakeets and cockatiels.
Lovebirds and cockatiels naturally have a tendency to eat vegetables and fruits which the parakeets do not posess due to thier small beaks. My parakeets first started to eat vegetables and fruits when they saw my lovebirds and cockatiels eating them and just followed thier fellow companions, they seemed to love it actually! So you need to show them that the vegetables and fruits are tasty and good to eat, you can do this by eating the vegetables and fruits yourself even, I’m not kidding!
Another way is to mix the fruits and vegetables in thier food mix of seeds and hence they have to bite at it if they want to eat. Then you need to hope that they like it and start eating the vegetables and fruits regularly on thier own.
Another way is to tie small parts of the fruits and vegetables to the parakeets favourite toys and hence hope that they eat it while playing with thier toys. This works really well if your birds have favourite toys.
Another way is to buy fruit and vegetable vitamins drops and put them in water, this is a sure fire way to get the vitamins and nutrients into them but the water may get contaminated soon and needs constant replacement.
I have written several such methods in my blog, I have even added HD videos of my parakeets learning from my lovebirds to eat vegetables and fruits as well as my parakeets eating coriander and chillies and how to hand feed them vegetables. So please see the links below.

Raising and Breeding Budgies (Parakeets) or tame Doves? Also, Sexing them?
Category: Parakeet Health
Hello! I have raised a baby dove with special Kaytee hand feeding formula. I named him Baby and soon he was weined and my mom set him free (by accident). He was wild from the start… My neighbors saw a nest in their tree being attacked by Blue Jays (the mean birds!) and brought it up to me. No vets would take him, and the nearest rehab was hundreds of miles away, so I cared for him. He now lives with his new friend he found a few hours after being released. I sometimes see him flying around my house (It was only a couple days ago). My parents told me later that night that I could get a young pair of doves or parakeets, my choice. They said I did really well with the wild dove that they expected to die that same night, and I saved his life (His sibling sadly died from the attack). They said since I had all the stuff and some of the knowledge needed, they would let me have a YOUNG pair of either. They want me to buy the young pair and tame them. They then said I could breed them and raise their babies.
I would love ANY information on how to sex, raise, breed, and care for them. Remember, it could be a pair of doves or parakeets… Also, how to pick out a pair from a pet store… What are good and bad signs?
Thanks!
PS: I know that it is a large commitment and challenge and all… I will deal with whatever comes my way, even raising the chicks on my own (with my mom/dad’s help when I am gone).
