Older cockatiel getting a mate? Quarantine period.?
Category: Parakeet Health
I am inheriting another abandoned cockateil. Tried to registar on a site that a fellow q&a’er (em),said but the site will not let me register. The site keeps looping. I have a male, the female that is coming to my home has lost 2 of her companians, (parakeets). I will put them through the 30 day quarantine period, but if they get along I do not have time for the caring of any offspring. Should I keep them seperated for ever? If they do get along and have offspring how bad will it be to take away the eggs? If I took the eggs away will she try to lay again? I’ve read about binding, and do not want to cause any undue stress, but If I don’t take the female more than likely the owners would just let her go! Gosh help me to do the right thing. There is another male around here I fear the owners are getting tired of. Hand raised Cockatiels are social birds not for show and tell. Anyone? Please…….
my 24+ year old cockatiel will be getting a new buddy soon…unsure whether to get a male or female. help?

so i have a cockatiel that is over 20 years old. a little backstory: he had a mate (betty) many years ago. sadly, she passed (looking back i realized she probably became eggbound) and barney missed her, so my mom got a parakeet to keep him company. after many years the parakeet we were told was male actually was a female. i didn’t discover this until i found her on the floor of the cage, a victim of being egg bound
she was probably 5 years old and never laid an egg before that first and only attempt. we also had other birds through the years, but now he is alone again. i didn’t want to get a new bird right away, but some time has passed, less than a year. recently my boyfriend suggested to get him a friend, and i know he’s right, barney needs company. now i am stuck on deciding to get a male or female. i am hesitant to get a female because of the egg laying and possible problems that go along with the territory, but i kinda feel like he’d like a female more. plus our other female cockatiels were so sweet, it makes me want a female. but then i think that barney is probably past his times where he wants a sweet little female. he was an adult bird when we got him, and it’s been 20 years that he’s been with us, so he’s probably 24 or older cuz he went to many homes before finding us. so maybe he just wants a friend? but he doesn’t seem like an old bird, he still dances and freaks out (in a happy way lol) every time a siren goes by or he hears spongebob or one of his countless favorites on tv. he has calmed down a bit, but you wouldn’t know it when he gets going lol. so, idk, i guess i’d like your input on the situation. what would you do in my situation? what’s the oldest any of your cockatiels have ever gotten to? i really feel like barney has many more years in him and i want to make those years happy for him as well as his future friend.
excellent point…dominance issues wouldn’t be good. i will definitely take that into consideration. i’ll make sure to give her the extra calcium she needs for her eggs if i get a female (im leaning more and more toward a female ). betty laid eggs fairly regularly, but she had a calcium and nutrient thing to nibble on just like gizzy our other female cockatiel. our last parakeet was supposedly a male and never successfully laid an egg, so that was just kinda out of nowhere.
i am also wondering whether it will be a problem that he is so much older than her? i will have them separate at first to see how they like each other, and if they get along well, they may be able to move in together lol. i just don’t know if her being so young will be a problem, i have heard somewhere…idk where, it probably isn’t even correct…but i have heard it is better if they are close in age…idk why it would be, but still, i do’t think i’m gonna find a 24 year old female for him lol.
paneerselvas: please learn to read.
no stupid answers.
Why is my cockatiel sitting at the bottom of the cage?
Category: Parakeet Health
We recently found a lost cockatiel outside and have been keeping it until we can find its owner. I’m not sure if it’s a male or female because it is not a grey cockatiel it’s more of a mix. And I have no idea how old it is either.
Anyway, it has been behaving fine since we found it, but for the last couple of days it has been sitting in the bottom of the cage periodically. It plays with the toys I put in the bottom and everything like that but I read that sitting in the bottom of the cage can be a sign of illness. But other than that its behavior is normal (i.e. preening, eating, drinking, etc)
I’ve also noticed that it has developed a very small bald spot on its forehead between the eyes.
Is this normal behavior and would molting cause a bald spot or should I consider taking it to a vet?
I’ve had two parakeets so that’s how I know a little about birds and their behaviors, but I’m sure there are some differences between parakeets and cockatiels.
No, I don’t see any egg ![]()
Okay, now I’m thinking it’s a female because there are stripes at the bottom of it’s tail, if this is any help.
Cockatiel problems. Please help!?

Last Sunday I bought a 6 month old male Cockatiel. I took him to the vet and he got a clear bill of health, but he hasn’t really been eating since I got him. I got him to eat some a few minutes ago but I had to take out all of the larger pellets and sunflower seeds out. So maybe the guy before, whose pet store has no phone for some reason, fed him parakeet food? And I also noticed that his droppings are sort of off-white, almost yellow instead of white. My first question is, is it healthy for a Cockatiel to eat Parakeet food? And is there something else wrong with him that could explain why his droppings arn’t white?
