Can I train my cat and parakeet to coexist?

We have a cat and a parakeet. We keep them in seperate rooms most of the time. When we have had them in the same room, we have had to grab the cat when he approached the cage. Is there any chance that we can train the cat to not go after the parakeet and train the parakeet not to be afraid of the cat?
