I’m getting a bird… What should I clean the cage with first?

I am getting a green cheek conure. I want to be fully prepared first though before I get the actual bird. I found this nice cage online that looks like it’s great quality and roomy, for an affordable price, with extras. I’ve contacted them and I’m probably going to be their buyer.

    http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/pet/1820901076.html

Obviously they have had a bird in this cage before though. I am assuming I need to clean and disinfect it before I put a bird in it, right? To avoid spreading disease or illnesses, etc? I’m wondering what I should do it with to keep the surfaces in the cage from being toxic to the bird?

this is my first medium/larger sized bird. I’ve had parakeets, finches etc… I’m just trying to be prepared.

How long does it take for her to have her first egg?

I have two parakeets one male one female. My parakeet is 5 years old. I seperated the male because he is often abusive and I assumed he would harm her during this process. But he is in the same room. Just in a different cage. When I checked my parakeet about 2 minutes ago… I noticed she was in her large food tray. Yesterday I had seen her kick half the food out to make room. I previously thought she was sick but now I think she is laying her eggs. How long should her first egg take to come out? And how long should it be till i worry about egg binding?
So I should check on her? Wouldn’t that just scare her?

    First pet bird?

I’ve been seriously thinking about adopting a bird from a rescue.
But the nearest rescue is about five hours away, so I want to be sure I’m ready for the commitment.

My biggest thing is the mess. I’m not expecting to find a macaw or anything, though I’d love to have one, but something more like a parakeet or cockatiel.
How often do you need to clean the cage bottom?
    Is the smell very bad?
What are the expected vet fees? The nearest avian vet is about an hour away, so I have the gas expectancy down, and the cost to give a check-up, but what about common diseases and illnesses?

I understand food cost, cage, pan liners, toys, etc.

    What else am I missing?

My parakeet first layed 2 eggs, a day later it layed another one.?

Can parakeets lay more then 2 eggs. If so, is it normal if the thrid egg comes out a day later then the first two eggs. was my parakeet egg bound for a while?

How do I retrain my first parakeet to sit on my finger after getting another parakeet?

I had a single parakeet for about 3 1/2 months. He was trained to sit on my finger and loved spending time with me. He would jump on his cage doors when he wanted to come out, which was quite often. I got another parakeet and now the first one won’t sit on my finger anymore. He constantly has to be next to the new parakeet and won’t let her out of his sight. I know this happens sometimes with two parakeets, but I miss having a trained parakeet. How can I retrain him?
