Older cockatiel getting a mate? Quarantine period.?
Category: Parakeet Health
I am inheriting another abandoned cockateil. Tried to registar on a site that a fellow q&a’er (em),said but the site will not let me register. The site keeps looping. I have a male, the female that is coming to my home has lost 2 of her companians, (parakeets). I will put them through the 30 day quarantine period, but if they get along I do not have time for the caring of any offspring. Should I keep them seperated for ever? If they do get along and have offspring how bad will it be to take away the eggs? If I took the eggs away will she try to lay again? I’ve read about binding, and do not want to cause any undue stress, but If I don’t take the female more than likely the owners would just let her go! Gosh help me to do the right thing. There is another male around here I fear the owners are getting tired of. Hand raised Cockatiels are social birds not for show and tell. Anyone? Please…….
my 24+ year old cockatiel will be getting a new buddy soon…unsure whether to get a male or female. help?

so i have a cockatiel that is over 20 years old. a little backstory: he had a mate (betty) many years ago. sadly, she passed (looking back i realized she probably became eggbound) and barney missed her, so my mom got a parakeet to keep him company. after many years the parakeet we were told was male actually was a female. i didn’t discover this until i found her on the floor of the cage, a victim of being egg bound
she was probably 5 years old and never laid an egg before that first and only attempt. we also had other birds through the years, but now he is alone again. i didn’t want to get a new bird right away, but some time has passed, less than a year. recently my boyfriend suggested to get him a friend, and i know he’s right, barney needs company. now i am stuck on deciding to get a male or female. i am hesitant to get a female because of the egg laying and possible problems that go along with the territory, but i kinda feel like he’d like a female more. plus our other female cockatiels were so sweet, it makes me want a female. but then i think that barney is probably past his times where he wants a sweet little female. he was an adult bird when we got him, and it’s been 20 years that he’s been with us, so he’s probably 24 or older cuz he went to many homes before finding us. so maybe he just wants a friend? but he doesn’t seem like an old bird, he still dances and freaks out (in a happy way lol) every time a siren goes by or he hears spongebob or one of his countless favorites on tv. he has calmed down a bit, but you wouldn’t know it when he gets going lol. so, idk, i guess i’d like your input on the situation. what would you do in my situation? what’s the oldest any of your cockatiels have ever gotten to? i really feel like barney has many more years in him and i want to make those years happy for him as well as his future friend.
excellent point…dominance issues wouldn’t be good. i will definitely take that into consideration. i’ll make sure to give her the extra calcium she needs for her eggs if i get a female (im leaning more and more toward a female ). betty laid eggs fairly regularly, but she had a calcium and nutrient thing to nibble on just like gizzy our other female cockatiel. our last parakeet was supposedly a male and never successfully laid an egg, so that was just kinda out of nowhere.
i am also wondering whether it will be a problem that he is so much older than her? i will have them separate at first to see how they like each other, and if they get along well, they may be able to move in together lol. i just don’t know if her being so young will be a problem, i have heard somewhere…idk where, it probably isn’t even correct…but i have heard it is better if they are close in age…idk why it would be, but still, i do’t think i’m gonna find a 24 year old female for him lol.

I’m getting a bird… What should I clean the cage with first?
Category: Parakeet Health
I am getting a green cheek conure. I want to be fully prepared first though before I get the actual bird. I found this nice cage online that looks like it’s great quality and roomy, for an affordable price, with extras. I’ve contacted them and I’m probably going to be their buyer.

Obviously they have had a bird in this cage before though. I am assuming I need to clean and disinfect it before I put a bird in it, right? To avoid spreading disease or illnesses, etc? I’m wondering what I should do it with to keep the surfaces in the cage from being toxic to the bird?
this is my first medium/larger sized bird. I’ve had parakeets, finches etc… I’m just trying to be prepared.
is my parakeet sick or getting sick???
Category: Parakeet Health
i think he’s sneezing, he makes this pfft sound sometimes but he’s still a very active little blue bird, eats the same amount of food and everything, no discharge or anything, on the other hand i read that these birds hide their symptoms until there really sick…is he sick or is he getting sick? if he is what can i do?
Is my parakeet sick or just getting old!?!?!?
Category: Parakeet Health
My parakeet has been very sleepy and lazy lately. We have two and the other one (Kiwi) doesn’t sleep as much as Sky (the sleepy one). Sky is almost three years old and Kiwi turned two in May! Sky is not as exiting and playful as he used to be. Please help!
Oh yea, and for other parakeet owners do your birds puff out their chests really big so it looks like they have a tumor?
Getting My Bird(s)’s Wings/Nails Clipped?
Category: Parakeet Health
I have decided to clip my bird’s nails and wings. Yes, I know, it’s like taking away their freedom, but I need to re-tame them, and it’s for their own safety. And their wings do grow back.
Question 1- Wing Clipping-
I plan on clipping my parakeet’s wings, but only two of my parakeets. Also, I am clipping both (I have two) of my cockatiel’s wings. I am most likely going to take them to a responsible pet store to get them clipped. Yes, I know that you should get them clipped by an Avian vet, but the Avian vets in my area don’t do bird wings and nails. They focus on health and injury problems. I was wondering how much it would cost for all four of them to get their wings clipped?
Question 2- Nail Clipping-
I am also getting their nails clipped. I do know about the Kwik, and how if you clip it too close, the bird may bleed to death. I am very aware of that. But their nails dig into my skin when they sit on my fingers, shoulders, arms, ect. My parakeets and cockatiels are getting their nails clipped. I was also wondering how much this will cost?
I live in Middletown, Ohio. Can you please tell me where a reliable, responsible, and experienced pet store that clips nails and wings near my area is? I know that you can do it yourself, but I’m too scared I’ll hurt them, especially with the Kwik and blood feather. Also, what should I take them to the pet store and back in? The parakeets would be fine in a shoe box, wouldn’t they? I think the cockatiels are too big to be kept in one shoe box together. What should I use for a transportion box?

How do I retrain my first parakeet to sit on my finger after getting another parakeet?
Category: Parakeet Community
I had a single parakeet for about 3 1/2 months. He was trained to sit on my finger and loved spending time with me. He would jump on his cage doors when he wanted to come out, which was quite often. I got another parakeet and now the first one won’t sit on my finger anymore. He constantly has to be next to the new parakeet and won’t let her out of his sight. I know this happens sometimes with two parakeets, but I miss having a trained parakeet. How can I retrain him?
