If you own a parakeet, make sure you notice every little change about their health. Parakeets are very happy, energetic, and chatty birds. They usually have clear eyes, a smooth beak and cere, and shiny feathers. If you can’t observe some of these in your parakeets, then something might be wrong.
The easiest way to check on parakeet health is to weigh them regularly. If their weight has decreased, it’s a sure sign that your parakeet has an illness.
A new parakeet in your house may be carrying diseases that might infect other birds in your house. To ensure the safety of all of your pets, isolate the newly arrived parakeet for at least 1 month. Their cage should be located in a separate room and always clean your hands with soap and water after touching or holding your parakeet.
Bring your pet parakeet to an avian vet in cases of emergency such as poisoning, attacked by another pet, burned, or other physical injuries and accidents.
Part of insuring good parakeet health is watching your bird closely for signs of illness. Some sure signs of illness among parakeets are change in droppings (watery/hard); not being talkative or inactivity; feathers are dirty and clumped together; irregular breathing; eyes, nose, or beak discharge liquid-like substance; not very bright eyes; swollen parts of bodies; no appetite; bleeding; convulsing; vomiting; bodies are hunched or fluffed up as if feeling cold; decrease in weight; and weak condition (e.g. falling off perch), staying on the bottom of the cage.
If your parakeet becomes hurt, don’t panic. Try to make the bird comfortable by tying gauze around the wound if there’s bleeding or putting it in stocking if wing is broken. Use small emergency bird cage with warm blanket for transporting the parakeet to the avian vet for further treatment.
Feeding your bird the proper diet, giving them lots of attention and makin sure you get them to an avian vet at the first sign of illness are all part of ood parakeet health care. Practice these things and you’ll enjoy the company of your feathered friend for many years.
