Parakeet FoodIf you are planning to buy a parakeet as a pet, or maybe you already own one, you should be aware of these parakeet pets care tips.

Parakeets, or budgies as they are rightfully called, are very easy to take care of provided you have the correct knowledge. It is very fulfilling to have these colorful birds as pets because they are very cheerful, endlessly entertaining, and can live a healthy and long life.

Like most pets, parakeets need attention from their owners. It is ok if you only own one parakeet if you are always at home, but if you work everyday and you are too busy to spend a lot of time with your parakeet, you should make sure your bird has lots of toys that will keep them interested in your absence, or better yet, you should consider getting another parakeet, any sex will do.

Another parakeet pets care tip is to make sure you feed them the proper diet. Parakeets should have a diet of seeds, pellets such as Roudybush, Harrison’s or Totally Organic Pellets and fresh organic fruits and veggies such as kale, dandelion greens, and carrot tops. Make sure your budgies eat their pellets by soaking them in organic baby food (sweet potatoe is a budgie favorite) and mixing in their favorite seeds. After washing their veggie greens, leave them thoroughly wet and  twine them between the bars of the cage. Parakeets love taking baths in wet veggie greens and by playing with them as toys, will come to eat them if they don’t love them off the bat. Moreover, you should also provide your pet with a cuttlebone for calcium. Do not give your parakeet gravel or grit as this can become impacted in their crop. Gravel and grit is for birds that have gizzards and eat their seeds whole. They need grit to help them hull the seeds in their gizzards. Parakeets don’t have gizzards because they hull their seeds before they eat them. Always be sure to give them new food every day. Their seed bowl may look full, but it could just be full of empty seed hulls.

You also want to make sure you get your bird a cage that is the appropriate size. It should be as big as you can afford. They need to be able to fly inside of it.. Also, be sure it has food and water dishes and is made from a non toxic material.

Do not trim the feathers of your parakeets. They are birds and are meant to fly. They need to fly in order to stay healthy. Do not let them fly in areas that are unsafe, have uncovered windows, where they can escape out of doors, or where there are other loose pets that could harm them.

You should also add branches and other perches of varying widths and sizes that will serve as the perches of your parakeet. This gives their feet good exercise and keeps them from getting foot sores or bumblefood. Avoid sand perches as these can cause foot sores. This is a great parakeet pets care tip because it will help to make your pet feel at home.
