Parakeet FlyingWhen training parakeets, it is very important to have patience because it can be a bit frustrating sometimes and it might take longer that you expected. But if you have patience and persistence, you will be well rewarded.

You usually see bird trainers on TV with their pet bird on their hand. This is the first important thing that you should learn. You can do this by slowly placing your hand inside the bird’s cage while feeding them. At first, your parakeet may be afraid, but keep trying – gently and slowly – every time you feed them. When the bird realized that you will not hurt them, they will stop flapping their wings and will gradually calm down.

The next step in training parakeets is to teach the parakeet to step up on a perch. Move the perch slowly towards the bird and push it a bit towards their lower chest/belly. After successfully placing the perch near the parakeet’s chest without them making a ruckus, you can press it a little more so that they will stumble. Because of this, the bird will eventually step up on the perch. Use the word ‘Up’ or ‘Step Up’ when teaching the parakeet this particular trick.

Next, teach them how to sit on your fingers. Do the same steps as when you are teaching your parakeet how to step up on a perch. But this time, use your finger instead of a perch.

Lastly, let your parakeet fly out of their cage. Have them stand on your finger while still inside the cage and then slowly move your hand towards the opening of the cage. Do this very carefully and slowly because your pet parakeet might be scared at first. But after a few days, it will be easy to let them out of their cage. Always bring them out of the cage on your finger. This way, they stay finger-trained and unafraid of hands.

Once you get these basic down, there are many tricks you can teach your pet. Training parakeets is not that difficult – they are actually quite smart – you just need to take the time to earn the birds trust and you’ll soon find that your parakeet will hop up on your finger or shoulder any time you want!
